Keeping Fish In Bare Tank Options

i know that goldfish tend to root around in gravel for food all day and night. so i set up my new 55 gallon tank to be bare with exception of a small pile of rocks for the fish to dig around in.

so for those of you who tend to keep your fish in all bare tanks (or mostly bare tanks) - do you find your fish getting bored? what kind of problems (if any) have you experienced with bare tanks?

i know it might sound silly, but i think some might understand.

i don't want to give my pets an environment where they will grow bored and depressed.

u can try using objects that do not have sharp corners that they can hurt themselves, and big enuff for them not to get choked and died.

I am keeping my goldfishes in a black colour Laguna tub with some plants (water lily, I guess, not good in plants). It looks nice and as long as you feed your goldfish frequently and enough, they will not bother those plants .

Majority here advocate bare tanks.I've had no problems with bare tanks,but tonnes of problem with gravel tank previously.Trapped poos and food creating all sorts of problem and diseases.

Its fine if you have large ornaments for deco purposes but without sharp corners as mentioned by Mountain.Sometimes you might unknowing cause shock to the fish and they will suddenly dart about puncturing themselves in the process.

And,driftwoods are a NO NO as well.

i have but a small amount of gravel in the tank. the though was to keep it to one side in a circle with a round air stone in its center. of course the fish have different ideas. i forgot how playful they can be with rocks. it's like he's pitching fastballs with them!!! every day i wake up the rocks are all over the place. it's funny. i have figured out a way to keep the rocks from getting so separated. i'm going to put larger rocks in a circle around the smaller rocks. that way the fish can still root around but when he throws them they shouldn't so often go outside the "lines".

oh i also have a skimmer box (for my wet/dry filter). it does have sharp edges on it. it's in the top left corner of the tank. should i do something about that?

I used some small pebbles n corals. they are doing fine. corals help remove the ammonia in the water

i also have no gravel in my tank, i find it easier to clean, but i do put in a few fake plants and the goldfish seem to like moving them around.... so if ur worried about boredom u can try that

driftwood changes water chemistry over time, in an uncomfortable way for goldfish.

this is a picture of my first bare bottom tank (29 gallons). i set it up for a 100 dollar ranchu i ordered from goldfishnet.com. i added an extra in tank filter to adds bubbles to the tank in addition to my air pump, cause goldfish seem to like to play in them. as you can see i planted my bamboo in a jar, this way it will not uproot, but it does not require a gravel tank. i may add a row of them in the future.

i hope my ranchu will like his new home

Do u have a pic of your $100 ranchu? I love to see pics of the fish.

I only have a small hydro-sponge filter to provide oxygen for my 38G, not sure it is too small for my tank. I do have two HOB power filters running on the tank. But I dont know the oxygen level is sufficient because I see my fish goes up to the surface for air sometimes.

Nice looking tank. Congrats for your new fish and I am glad you provide a good living environment for your fish.

BUT, the plant(bamboo) inside the tank is a big problem. bamboo is not an aquatic plant (at least the leaves should stay above water level). I would remove it ASAP.
