any comments? is it advisable for me to keep aquatic plants with my mixture of ranchus (2 x 4-5 inches), bubble-eyes, red-cap oranda and oranda,... total 11 of them. Will the aquatic plants affect the pH, KH, etc. These terms are very alien to me but somehow I learnt a lot from those fantastic articles posted by goldrush and others.

I think the floating plants such as hyacinths or duckweeds are OK.
But not advisable to mix your bubble eyes with others.

Glad that you enjoyed our postings and articles .Your mixed varieties in your "goldfish community tank" to the uninitiated may add dimension initially to your appreciation but sad to say some of these varieties may not be too compatible for the good of long term keeping.Delicate breed like bubble eyes often are compromsed by their bulkiness and dangling growths and will not be able to compete for food with better structured species.Oranda and ranchu seems good tankmates in the beginning but as each grow to reach their potential,perhaps oranda being endowed with a dorsal fin may require more height space as compared to ranchus.But again,some may just keep these together to add to their varied taste in the given space and who are we to say if you thoroughly enjoy their company

hahahaha ... u will be surprise that bubble eyes are faster eater than ranchu or oranda.

Goldrush, I really appreciate your view on this. The bubble eyes belong to my daughter (two and half years old) who happens to share my tub . Agreed, speed & size does matter in deciding who gets the food. Matrix proven his point as well, bubble eyes usually are the one that had the first bite of everything I throw into the tub. But ranchus, due to its size, albeit a bit slow, will ram the party and get its share as well.

I was a bit worried about overcrowding the tub with too many goldfishes. In fact, I was caught by surprise this evening that the plant was growing so fast (had a 2-days break in Cherating, Kuantan) covering almost half of the tub & growing … caused by overfeeding … my father in-law took care of the fishes while I am away, guess he overfed them … and water turns murky. I am still very confused over the pH, KH, issue, well, will revisit those articles posted again…. Nevertheless, kudos to all the EXCELLENCE articles posted in this forum, still the best available in the Internet after scouting the net for the past few months and visited so many bookstores in search of a technically sound book on Goldfish but none can be found.

do watch the growth rate on all the fishes. bubbles has faster growth rate than the rest. likely u got to remove them to another tub before the rest of the fishes weaken.

I did a complete WC today, simply cannot stand the murky water. I filled up a toyogo white colour plastic box with the water from the black colour tub. To my surprise, the water actually shown tinted green, not dark green, unlike the green water cultivated by HappyBudda in his article. I think it is probably green water, so I kept 10% of it as seed, change the water, put back all the plants, and the assummingly green water seed too... fishes looks happy and once completed the WC, was eagerly looking for food once my daughter stand near the tub...

I got some questions pertaining to aquarium, planning to get one soon for the living room.

1. for a 5' x 2' x 2' tank, what is the correct water depth to house goldfishes? was told not too deep as goldfish prefers shallow water. Will it look weird for a 2' depth tank but 8" of water?

2. Do we need water chiller? Was told by so-called LFS goldfish expert (some reservations until I hear it from the sifus here) that it is vital to keep the water temperature low (26 degree c) to maintain the colour of goldfish, actually seen a 2' depth tank with water chiller running...
