I went to Home Of Ranchu @ Bukit Batok yesterday (Sunday). The fishes have decently nice side view but are TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE hmm.gif Their emphasis is on the back half of the body. Mostly the curve to tail are perfectly swee swee. The quite affordable ones at $30 have long bodies. yuk.gif Also saw a white ranchu which is already sold. It looks quite perfect to me.

I was lucky to see arrival of new stock. Quality quite good but again see beh expensive. Saw a very nice new black ranchu but $80 to me is see beh gui.

So I ended up empty handed tongue.gif . Usually see good ones sure impulsively buy. Luckily they are too highly priced so I was not so gian.

So maybe anyone who has the extra cash in hand and looking for good ranchu with good curve and tail can go there look see.

PS: Saw a few bros there too. Maybe they also from this forum ah?

The very few AAA competition ones ok nothing to say if they charge at $300. But the AA+ grades ones... standard so-so nia... but some priced at more than $100. ohmy.gif . Some small small ones smaller than 3-inches is about $100.

The black ranchu is about 3-4 inches big. Very nice. The colour is that type which the won't go off one. Some black ranchus has been treated with some medicine so they look quite black when you buy it. After some times the colour will fade and you will end up with those brownish colour. Yes got cheek. Overall is AAA grade.

1 uncle was looking at it as if he is buying at the time I left. I think the shop owner misplaced the ranchu. It should be higher end at above $100 catagory. So you should be lucky if it is still there tomorrow. Good luck good.gif

This is the 1st time I heard about black enhancer. Do you by any chance know what kind of medicine it is?

I also quite surprised to hear it from a shopowner. The term used is "pah zarm" (in hokkein means poke needle). He say some black ranchus in the market have been "pah zarm" so the colour looks very black when just reach store. Usually done by the suppliers, not the shopowners. The colour will fade in 2-3 weeks' time and reduced to those goldish-brown colour. So better to keep a lookout for such scams. I was told the way to look at the difference is the size of the fish scales. Usually the authentic black ones have smaller scales and very black like charcoal.

Dunno the uncle got sian me or not... and I don't own black ranchus also. Maybe some bros who frequent fish shops can ask about this and share share here yes.gif

Hi,

There are no such thing as colour enhancer or things that make it more dark in colour, what you are getting most probably is the low grade ranchus where it is possible that it will turn the colour to brownish colour as this kind of ranchus do happen with the ranchu from China.

If you buy the lower grade ranchus such as A or even AA to some extent there are possibilities that it will lose the black colouration usually it's because genetics. In one batch of spawn (even though the parents are solid charcoal or velvet black), there are still the fries that are not black as the parents, that is why they have different grading systems, and like how sometimes you may find even smaller 2" or 3" will cost hundreds of dollars.

Try to expose the fish in sunlight as much as possible and in green water so that it will enhance it's colours too.

Cheers
Nanik

I believe most bros here when they see good fish they'll just pay for it. After all, it's difficult to find a perfect fish and they prefer quality over quantity so price is never a big concern unless it's outrageously expensive.

Why didn't you just ask if they're from here? Chances are low since I seldom hear anyone buying ranchus from that shop. It's nearly always Aquatic Connection and Aquatic Connection. Imagine if there's a SARS at AC, most of the members here will be infected with the disease. Grin.
