I have to admit I got a soft spot for calicos, and this one did not escape my fancy.
A good 5 inch across its length, the red patch across its face is the only blemish on an otherwise uniformly colored fish.I have included a video and some static shots for all to appreciate. Incidentally this fish resembles another fish which I have shown earlier with that atypical oblique red across the face. First a video Some close up shots A topview Enjoy goldrush |

Glad both of you love the calico featured.I will try to update on its progress.Currently I feel the color is a bit weak, probably under stress.Calico are sensitive fish.Their black streaks along the tail usually fades to a dull hue under poor water condition, new environment or simply under some form of stress(infective or otherwise)

2 months ago,I have shown forum this particular piece.
Now, this fish was kept in isolation throughout this 2 month period in a 2 feet 5-plan tank.It enjoyed 100% change of water daily and fed exclusively on only 2 meals of paste food daily.Despite its confined space,it has certainly bulk with thickness and girth if you would concur with me.Question is do we need more meals to sustain growth as prescribed here or just 2 or 3 feedings of high quality feed is suffice to attain similar result? I leave such a controversial subject to your very own discretion Meanwhile just enjoy A topview showing the thickness of its back finally an updated video just for your viewing pleasure |

Nice fish doc. 100% water change daily over 2 months ?? Woaw!, You do spend a lot of time of your goldfish. Well, the result speaks for itself .... I now understand why my GFs nether grow that nice with a couple of hours of care weekly.

Hi Doc...
I have recently purchased a calico oranda...(though nothing of high grade..since it Oz, its got a fault in its tail) mainly it would help me develop my skills in keeping calico. you mentioned they are sensitive and could loose their black streaks on their fins.....i was wondering do you keep your calicos indoor or outdoors. Coz mine would be kept at this stage indoors with 8hrs of lighting. Could this effect their color? |

At the moment my calico ranchus are outdoor and calico ryukins are housed indoor.Though light play a part in enhancing and developing its color, water conditions are equally important.I find the calico loosing its lustre and colors faster in poor water conditions. If you can get all your criterias right,I'm sure you will be rewarded with vivid display of rich and magnificent colors of this colorful breed. |

To sidetrack a little from Doc's post, here is a small tip for lazy hobbyists out there:
I have somewhat similar observation that the black parts of a calico goldfish are very sensitive to changes to its living conditions. I always keep at least one calico-coloured fish in my main tank. So whenever the black parts fade (turn brownish or greyish), then I know it is time to do a water change . You will also notice that the black will return within 5-6 hours after a thorough water change. A fully black fish does not perform as well of an "indicator" as a calico fish though. |

kekekeke a live indicator which is far more sensitive than any other test kits!
Another tip. When you choose a calico at the LFS color is the least important. Those left overs are the best after assessing their overall physiques.Prices would have come down by 50% at least. |

Doc..you mentioned about paste food....what do you mix with the granular feed to make it less susceptible to disintegrating once it hit the water?
As for the fish, definitely bulked up and the black is more intense now. I hate you. Regards, PP |

Bind it with egg (additional protein)and make into dough and feed accordingly.
It's alright "You will love to hate me or hate to love me" |
