I have 2 tanks, 3 & 4 ft.

I bought the Seachem "Ammonia Alert" for each tank.

Noticed that my 3ft tank always at "Alert color" even after I did water change 50% and whack ammo lock into water.
Presently I running 2 cannisters (Both Jebao) on it. I use Eheim sub pro & biohome plus (red colour) and CR.
4ft tank is ok on safe colour.

Can anyone help on ammo stuff. smile.gif

ammo lock may turn the ammonia into non toxic form, but it is still registered by ammonia alert. Try doing a 90% change instead..

How old is the ammonia alert meter? I can't remember the exact value but it takes a while for the meter to become sensitive and accurate. Also... what's the pH like? The meter is calibrated for pH 7 only.

dom...
if possible, do away with your canister filter...
goldfish bio load is way too heavy for canister filter which i personally feel....
unless you clean thoroughly every week....

change 80-90% water weekly......not 50%
with this, no need any ammonia lock or fancy stuffs....
just buffer and antichlorine tats it....

i am the "bohiew" "anti test kit" kind of guy....
my 4ft running on a 3 tier overhead filter and 2 sponge filter...
6 pcs of 5 inch fishes inside...
change 90% water every week....
fishes are active, doing well and eating well....
growing fast too....

Save the money and get a good air-pump plus a couple of sponge filter instead.

I change 100% once every 2-3 days but my BB are thriving.

BB is everywhere in the tank but most of them are colonizing in the bio-media (sponge, ceramic rings, biohome etc). So when you change water, just make sure you keep the bio media moist.

Very important to take note is to make sure you apply anti-chlorine when adding replacing the water. Chlorine kills BB very quickly.

So how much water do you suggest to change to keep BB alive ? What is your current practice ???
