Hi all,

I plan to visit chatuchak in Bangkok and hope to bring back some nice ranchus back to singapore. Is it possible to hand carrry these on board the plane? And will I need to get some export documentation prepared and if so, would the shops in chatuchak be able to help?

An alternative is to have it forwarded by professional forwarder.

I heard they take care of everything except packing the fish which you should leave to the seller.

Hi, am new to this forum but I have had some experience bringing goldfish back from BKK. Previously all I had to do was to arrange for my fish to be packed in a styrofoam box on day of departure and just check it in. Invariably the person at the customs where you have your bags X-rayed will ask you what's in there and normally I just tell them the truth and they will want to know which airline you are going on. If it is SIA or TG, usually no problem. Nowadays, there seem to be too many people doing that so occasionally it gets sticky and so most breeders will help you get a health certificate just before check-in. But I think they will only do that for you if you buy in significant quantities or depending on your relationship with them. If, however, you are very unlucky and meet a nasty officer at the customs, then there is a possibility they will just refuse to allow it thru. Handcarrying is not advised as many have had their fish confiscated.

I understand that last month the Thai custom imposed a new regulation where you have to fill up a form (at a place not exactly near the departure hall) that is written in Thai language to declare your live stock. So it's not like it used to be where you could just check-in the package. I'm sure the airline staffs will advise you accordingly on how to do get clearance but make sure you arrive at check-in well ahead of time!

Hi again,
Apparently the Thai customs have had a ruling that livestock must be declared at check-in for the last 2 years or so. But this is not always adhered to by the officials at the customs.
I would seriously suggest that you get the breeder/farm where you get your fish from to help you with the necessary paperwork BEFORE you get to the airport - things may not function so efficiently there especially if you speak no Thai!

And I would like to highlight an implication, which is you should avoid buying fishes at the Chatuchak market for the make-shift sellers there will not be able to help you with declaring custom!

Ha ha. Sorry I have to disappoint you but I think you're glad you found out about it now then later.

Not all is lost though; you can always pick up accessories/medications in chatuchak that are not available or more expensive locally. Unfortunately off hand I can't think of anything seriously useful except for that special fishing net Caster was raving about in another thread, and a certain banned medicated food. sad.gif Oh... there's also that ranchu magazine in thai language that he gotten for free you might want to pick up as souvenir.

U need to do paperworks at the Air cargo area at(area 5 n 6),3rd floor,Live animals quarantine room, fill in the form, then get the permit to export the fish(can be fined up to 40,000baht for not having permit).. Photocopy ur Passport n air ticket, there is a copier machine downstairs.. U DUN HAVE TO BRING THE FISHES THERE,ITS ONLY PAPER WORK,just declare how many fishes u planning to take.. THE DEPT is not open on SAT n Sun..

On the day of departure must put the fishes into "STYROFORM BOX"(price is 150 baht per kg),check-in with your lagguages, dun tink can hand carry on plane...

Collection the airport!!

Styroform box is a MUST!!

Hope its clear enuff!!

Hello nismoman77

I've only been to Bangkok once and I'm not familiar with the layout of the airport but I recall although they have two teminals, unlike changi airport, they are actually in the same building. Please tell me is the "air cargo area at (area 5 n 6), 3rd floor, Live animals quarantine room" is in which terminal? Thanx.
