I was googling and came across this unusual (to me) goldfish at a Japanese web site.

IPB Image

It has the head of a top-view ranchu but a butterfly tails. There's a dorsal fin on the ranchu-like body; I wonder how it looks from the side.

I can't read Japanese, but here's the page with more goldfishes I've never seen before.

I can read some Japanese, this says Oranda. Some of the pics on this site has these characters under it. I cannot be certain if it is saying it is an oranda or looks like oranda.

This page is an advertisment for a "in taa netto kingyo-ya" which means internet goldfish store.

When my Mom comes to visit this holiday season , I will ask her to translate for me. If you guys want to know exactly what it says.

Ok, my nihonjin otomodachi (Japanese friend) translated some for me. He was busy so he couldnt' give me details.

On the whole, this page describes Oranda goldfish for sale at this goldfish store. Each photo lists the owner (breeder?) of the fish shown.

My friend was puzzled in that he doesn't know some of the meaning, because he doesn't know anything about goldfish. If fact he was asking what an Oranda was?

Any way I hope this helps in anyway. But I suspect that these fish are Japanese Oranda.

They are super nice! I never thought Oranda would be a top view type of fish.

Ah... so those might be the Japanese Orandas (although the one I posted has an even rarer ranchu-like head). I would have guessed that the particular one I posted is a Demekin. Of course, the rest in that page do not have a butterfly tails.

Now I know Japanese Oranda can be apprciated from the top. I hope they still look fabulous from the side. yes.gif

Ironically, Oranda is Japanese translation for english "Holland" Back in the old days, this type of fish was known as a "Dutch Ranchu", but shortened to just called Oranda (Holland).
So this oranda having a strong ranchu wen may truly be what an oranda should look like.

woooo ... yup. oranda should actually hv the tail and body of the ancient ryukin and a goose head; a cross between a ryukin and a lionhead. straight back, high head growth and graceful tail.

HB, that butterfly tail in the pic need a lot to improve if they really want to move to that region of breeding. But a japan oranda should hv a slightly smaller head growth then the present chinese oranda and elongated body. if i remembered correctly, there are some clubs that actually do annual competition in tokyo in april or may for other varieties.

the only fish that still compete in the side view is ryukin. jikin is actually bred for top view.

Do they compete the pearlscales? I for one prefer to look at Pearlies from the top where the body is ball-shape. It's like having ping pong balls in the tub. In this light, the short-tail variety is preferred.

... but those damn malaysian pealies with short-tails are difficult to keep alive the last time I tried. I'll attempt it when I have a new tub.

Nothing of this sort but sigh... it was my fault.

Here's their class photo. I love the one with a number 3 pattern on its back.

Read what happen to them at the old board.

How a topview ranchu swims carries the most weight in competition.

Does the same applies to a topview oranda too? unsure.gif
