How much to feed? Options

I do agree its both nature and nurture!
My Japs Tosai are about the same sizes as those in Japan. I don't think climate makes difference!

boss, i need to learn from you. if you dont mind of course.
-those 5 feeds per day, at what time u feed them? every 3 hours or 4 hours?
-do u feed them at nite also?
-do u use filtration? if yes, what kind?

just to share my experience.
- i feed 3 times a day. morning, noon, afternoon(3pm-ish)
- i dont feed at nite because i use green water
- i use sponge filter plus green water. sponge filter is just to draw the large poops.

Here's my 2 cents worth (damn... getting broke giving away lots of 2 cents lately. )

I can't offer you how to tell if you are UNDERfeeding your fish, but I know how to tell if you're OVERfeeding.

Look at their poos. Well fed fish's poos are short and chunky. The best description I can give is "sligthly larger than a grain of rice." If you see long suasage-like poos, you've overfed your fish as they didn't digest the food fully. In the case overfeeding of bloodworms, you'll see empty shells of bw floating around. Poos of fully digested bw are little. So observe and adjust the quantity of feed yourself.

For a green water setup, you may have to stop feeding by noon if the surrounding is pitch dark early in the evening. Remember; alage reverts to taking in DO when there's no sunlight and won't take in ammonia anymore. So.. you may continue to feed to late afternoon if you're running your metal halide lamp into the night, otherwise stop at noon. I hope you understand what I'm saying.
