I got two aquaclear 300 filter on my 30 gallon tank (bare bottom) with 4 goldfish.

How often should I clean the sponges in the fitler media ? I am always worrying that those trapped poos in the sponges would foul my water after deteriorating over time.

thx
charlie

why worry so much about those poo.

just normal weekly 90% change and at the same time clean up 1 of the filter will do. alternate week switch filter to clean will not harm your filtration.

actually with the water system here alot of the NY goldfish keepers do 30% water change every week and all the parameters would show 0 amonnia, 0 nitrate, and sometimes very little nitrite.

But as for me I do 10% everyday.

haha, I don't think new york has many quality goldfish sellers to begin with, except if you go to chinatown, which you can find 1 or 2. Most of other places has goldfish that is so bad, i don't think they even make it to the grading system.

Anyway, about my tank: I have three 3 inch sized oranda. And one 4.5 inch oranda. 2 Angelfish, 1 pleco. Also, 1 hydrosponge filter with 2 aquaclear 300 filter.

take a photo with fish in water, not in your hand please. sorry, but chinese fish got such thing as oya ? the fish looks pretty small for a 3 yrs old fish. I used to measure butt from mouth to penduncle, so your fish around 4" in size.

heh I ordered this one from japan, might have been stunted as it came over here, was really stressed when I first got it. In any case do you think it is a nice strand as a demekin?

BTW the fish is in green water, and I don't want to stress it any more with PH jumps by switching the water, I need him for hand breeding

I found his old pics kinda at an angle though.

here's him holding still
IPB Image

and here's him swimming, you can actually see he's closing the gap between his tail if you want to judge him under "Deportment and Condition" good_very.gif

IPB Image

also I mentioned before he has a deflated swim bladder and that means he can't hold up straight for the time being, so no more new pics of him swimming yet cry.gif

It's still worth a try sweatingbullets.gif anyways he doesn't show much signs of stress, although he's on a side he's still active in fact he can push him self to the point of his head facing down for food, his poop is not too long and is brown like what I feed him, all his fins are erect, and he has no red streak mark.
