I was googling and came across this unusual (to me) goldfish at a Japanese web site.
![]() It has the head of a top-view ranchu but a butterfly tails. There's a dorsal fin on the ranchu-like body; I wonder how it looks from the side. I can't read Japanese, but here's the page with more goldfishes I've never seen before. ![]() |

Hi Happybuddah!
I found some interesting info about the name of these goldfish from the web site. I wrote earlier... QUOTE This type of oranda is called oranda shishi gashira I haven't been around because I have been busy researching. I bought a few older goldfish books that were written 40 to 80 years ago. Very cool stuff. Any way... oranda shishigashira translates to "dutch lionhead". Which implies that the use of "dutch" sort of like "false or pretend" to make this a valid variety. Remember, this comes from old text. I found lot's of interesting names for goldfish in the old days. So the use of the full name for the oranda on this web site makes me think that these oranda resemble the oranda that were bred 100 or so years ago. If you want me to post more "interesting goldfish history" let me know. I won't do it on my own as I would hate to bore you guys. Since some of you, (Demekin ![]() |
