Right-on; short-tails Pearlscales!

IPB Image

I used to have some. cry.gif They killed one another...

Generally speaking, the short-tail variety does not have a crown.

Above are the long-tail variety which usually has a crown (that often resembles... nevermind. biggrin.gif) on its head.

ET'S pride and joy... : happydance.gif I think it's 2 feet long by now. unsure.gif

PS. They're not "Pearl Scale" but "Pearlscales".

I forgot to add.... did you noticed yours has larger head (from topview) compared to mine? I was told it's nicer to have short-tails pearlies with tiny head.

yap, tats right.. not the kinda that we wanna play with. when i got it , it was tiny head, but that was when i started off this hobby. Its now stuned + out of shape because i didn't know how to keep it. prob ask g-string to see if he wanna grab 1 or 2 together and we can start to see how much can it grow.

Wah... you guys want to play with Pearlies ah? Short-tail ones I hope; they are cuter with their small head and tails making them really ball-like.

Here're how I would select my pearlscales.

1. The head must be small. This can be tough if you're not familiar. Go to a few LFS to compare and learn first. They are rarer but not that hard to find!

2. The penducle must not be long; mountain's seem okay while wheretoeat's are too long.

3. The black eyes... must be nicely surrounded inside a chrome ring. See ET's;swee! See wheretoeat last pic - like kenna whack blacken eyes. rofl2.gif

Sorry hor; I think it won't kill you I condemn a little about your pearlies; $2 not that heart pain right? salute.gif

Add some more:-

4. The tiny tails should open up instead of closed. That's actually quite common. Some, however, are opened too wide and looking like a stiff cross. Yuk.

5. Needless to say the body must be round but this really refers to looking down from the top. The side profile of a pearlie is not really all rounded; The back is relatively straight (like a good lionhead). Mountain's red/white side profile actually resembles a ranchu ah! biggrin.gif

6. Given that good pearls meeting the above are not difficult to come by, I'd go one step further and pick one with a unique colouration/pattern. See ... I had that number 3 ball. biggrin.gif Find one that has the planet earth printed on its body, will ya?

Hmm.. you guys were talking about pearlscales last evening but I didn't know you are serious about it.

Seeing their pics is making me quite tempted. I still don't like crown pearls. I have spare tubs and will source for short-tails. Wish me luck in landing good ones and the same to you.

Eh..HB, you miss out this, they must have hump also, like ryukin. Mountain's one don't look nice because no hump....
Why not all of us start hunting for PS, and have a mini competition ? They are relatively cheap compared to ranchu....

Hey guys, I love the idea of the Pearscales competition! Shall we do it?

Let's see... why Pearlies? Because the short-tails variety is cheap at $2 (€0.97). Try getting a decent ranchu for $2; you can't. Heck, for $2 you probably can't get a decent Ryukin or Oranda too. Pearlies are for cheapskates. biggrin.gif

The aim of this competition... well, there's a China goldfish Competition Standard to look at (Click here) but we'll keep it simple -- see who can develop his pearlies really big. It has to be healthy; a fat fish that lies on the floor waiting to die is just pathetic.

I think we should all start with pearlies from the same spawn, ie, we all pick from the same tank at a specified LFS. This way the chances of someone getting a super-duper bloodline (by chance) is reduced when he picked his at another LFS.

I think we won't care how you groom it. Green Water, green water with filtration, clear water with daily change, clear water that never change for 4 months ... whatever. It's your call.

How's that? Add on the list on what you like to the little competition to be like!
