QUOTE(yckhor @ Tue, 03 May 2005 10:25 pm) I did a complete WC today, simply cannot stand the murky water. I filled up a toyogo white colour plastic box with the water from the black colour tub. To my surprise, the water actually shown tinted green, not dark green, unlike the green water cultivated by HappyBudda in his article. I think it is probably green water, so I kept 10% of it as seed, change the water, put back all the plants, and the assummingly green water seed too... fishes looks happy and once completed the WC, was eagerly looking for food once my daughter stand near the tub... Nice that kids love the work. Funny, u got plants and filter ??? if it's green, then u got a very strong light system ... or near balcony with direct sunlight ? QUOTE 1. for a 5' x 2' x 2' tank, what is the correct water depth to house goldfishes? was told not too deep as goldfish prefers shallow water. Will it look weird for a 2' depth tank but 8" of water? It's okay. Dun worry about 2' depth. as long as u can tahan such large water change ... kekekeke QUOTE 2. Do we need water chiller? Was told by so-called LFS goldfish expert (some reservations until I hear it from the sifus here) that it is vital to keep the water temperature low (26 degree c) to maintain the colour of goldfish, actually seen a 2' depth tank with water chiller running... Up to you liao. If u wanna invest in a chiller, by all means. But running the chiller is not cheap with our type of weather. |

Mr Khor,
Maybe you shd start another thread for your queries. Yes, 8" of water in 5x2x2 tank sure looks weird, but since you are not keeping TV ranchus do not worry about the depth.I keep mine in 22" of water (ryukins and SVs), no problems. And in some natural ponds the water depth can be a few feet deep. I had even tried my unwanted cheap TV ranchus in my friends 6ft koi pond, no problems! (No problems surviving, but it sure aint the way to groom them). As for chiller,I dont see the need for it, our indoor tank temperature is about 24 to 26 C anyway.I have only seen chillers being used in marine tanks and koi ponds, not goldfish tanks. Rgds |

dear sifus,
thank you for your kind comments. yes... my tub is at the backyard of my house (south face north). so, direct sunlight in the morning from east but shaded in the afternoon due to a bamboo curtain that I setup above the tank, I don't want to cook my goldfishes... but surprisingly, the water temperature always feel cool.... at least compared to my tap water... ok... thermometer on the shopping list.. 1. ok then. 2' depth tank confirmed. water bill is still affordable in KL 2. but, will chiller help to improve the colour of goldfish? or at least maintain it in the house where no direct sunlight? also, I think I am keeping SV ranchus... actually not very sure.. did follow the guideline posted in some articles here... should be SV. It is actually imported from China... TongGoon, GuangChou. just love the way it swims.... |

If u go china next time, visit the farms. some of the china farm sites or even tunghoi vcd also show their farms. Where got fish cook from sun light. Common sense please. U think the china farm use something to cover their few kilometers ponds or not leh. your tank is big enough, so just be sure to know anything that can conduct more heat into the water than worry about the sun. |

Come on guys, show your tanks! Old or new it doesn't matter.
CP's fish are in haven, his set up is ideal. Desireless, can you please post one with fish? Please? Or take a new pic if possible? Marc9, I adore how clean and simple that looks! What filters are installed in there beside the sponge filter? Ok waiting for more... |
