----Posts moved from "Chit chat and gossip" as I find this thread rather informative on sources of goldfish in Australia------
-CP Topic split from Black Ranchu With Pom Poms QUOTE(kencheng @ Tue, 25 Apr 2006 12:12 am) BUT i have seen some nice goldfish around, you just have to be REALLY patient hunting - and I mean 6 - 12 months! Hi KenCheng, I am in Melbourne too. Where do you normally go hunting here? I normally go to a shop in St Kilda and Richmond. Thanks. This post has been edited by CP: Thu, 01 Jun 2006 12:52 pm |

WAAAA how can tell you! You will go and compete with me and pick all the good ones.
Kidding I only keep ryukins so you can buy everthing else I only got 4 ryukins so far, all bought from New Life on Victoria Street (the one in the backshop run by chinese man). His quality quite inconsistent but mostly sells goldfish. St Kilda aquarium is not bad but I have not bought anything from them yet, normally only see AAA commercial grade there. Sounds like you already found where all the good goldfish shops are Got any other secret location to share with me? I have been asking the owner at StKilda to help me get some good ryukins but he is still 'hunting' Has been almost 2 months already If you see anywhere got good ryukins please PM me immediately! |

QUOTE(kencheng @ Thu, 27 Apr 2006 4:03 pm) Hi KenCheng, That's the shop... The owner is a friendly man, however he always say the stock is new... No la... ;) I won't compete with you. My wife has been breaking my chops ever since I last bought 2 fish from that shop. I don't think I will get any in the near future. I have 8 goldfish altogether. 2 LionHeads, 2 Orandas, 1 Black Moor, 1 Ryukin, 1 Black Ranchu and 1 Pearlscale. They are ordinary and is the 1st batch of goldfish I have since I started this hobby back in Jan 06. I used to study in S'pore and some Hokkien here really make me laugh and brings back memory when my friends were teaching me the dialect... No worries mate. If I spot good goldfishes, I will PM you. Best of luck in hunting the ones you like |

Hi kencheng, you mentioned you taking help of some brisbane base lfs owner to import some ryukins...... which lfs is he from.
Coz recently i had a talk with the owner of "The Aquarium" shop he was telling me that he is the only LFS onwer who gets his fishes direct from the supplier/famr most of LFS get it thru some agent. He mentioned that he was on his way to China to a farm in 3months time after he does some extensive renovation to his shop. He showed me some snaps from the chinese farm and those fishes look awesome......mostly likely he said he would get some good quality fishes from there in about 3-4months time.... do keep posted on how your managing to import your ryukins...i would like to knw how the procedure works....if u dont mind. Do anything to get good grade fishes here..... Cheers, Kinder |

I have asked someone that has a quarantine facility to organise for the imports. Basically it is like a trans-shipping facility where the fish gets imported, quarantined before being sent to me in Melbourne.
There is another group that imports their fishes directly from Tung Hoi - that is Slippery Little Suckers (SLS) in Sydney. Who is this aquarium shop in Brisbane? Do you think they would sell me their fish interstate? Give me their contact please If you want to PM me and I will send you the contact of the person looking at the import. |

Fishchick - did you see the Utsuri Domo Ryukin pictures yet? Here are the links; http://www.rafflesgold.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2248 It is basically a black & white ryukin, there are a few floating around the world market - apparently quite rare! Anybody got lobang (aka insider information) where I can find good quality calico ryukins? |

Hey i was pretty damn close to the owner of New life. Chinese guy who loves horse racing. Used to hangout with him alot. He gets his stock from Box Hill and Epping. Occasionally he might have some nice fishes but they're still of normal or low grade. Well, can't expect much. Pretty hard to come by quality goldies in melb. St Kilda is pretty expensive though and was told by a guy who worked there before that their goldies are mostly from Malaysia and Thailand and they claimed them to be from JAPAN
which is pretty ridiculous and China which they dont look like chinese specimens at all. What you can do is look for this shop on warrigal road, oakleigh which specialises in Discus. You can ask the owner (Another Chinaman) to import goldies for you although he doesnt really sell them.cos he's a licensed importer and he's got ways to get nice fishes in. Or else, there's this shop on Whitehorse Rd,Box hill which used to stock reasonable goldies. Dunno bout now but it has been yrs since i've been there. Last time i was there..nuthin much-crappy ones. Well, i've basically been to almost all shops that were listen in the yellowpages when i was mad . Just a thought or two. Cheers |

What you say is true - good goldfish hard to get in Melbourne - that's why I was desperate and got Jodi-Lea to import for me from Thai Ranchu Centre.
New Life Depending on luck, need to practise your ability to pick potential. Sometimes he gets nice fishes but they tend to be mixed in with a large batch he buys in. But he always claim his stock to be 'new'. No system and hard to know when he is going to buy new fish. St Kilda Aquarium Some nice fishes there but EXPENSIVE! Also the person that 'hand picks' his goldfish needs training Some things he tell me I am not sure whether I should PaiSeh for him or for myself he told me that male and female goldfish different shapes, so I should not expect to get male goldfish that could be as round and big as a female goldfish... Maybe because he was trying to sell me this pair of black malaysian/thai ranchus but the female is very 'non' balanced. BoxHill shop Must have changed hands in the last few years because they have stopped stocking nice goldfishes. In fact, most of the goldfishes there are hanging on to dear life with a thin thread. Oakleigh Discus shop This guy has nice discuses but I neve thought of asking him to import goldfishes for me because he seems to specialise in Discus. Maybe I will ask him but last time I was in his shop (last month) no goldfish at all impellitteri - you still keep goldfish? |

Yeah, just couldn't trust what they say in shops. Sometimes they're just full of shit. I worked in Upmarket for a short while and most of the guys there, they dunno shit man.
When i was back there, all my goldies were from new life. Had a 6ft back then and it took me more than a year to stock the tank with 9 fellas. Like to have an assortment but i'm quite a SV ranchu guy myself. If i'm not mistaken, there's this wholesale which they're called aqua industries or something like that. Apparently they supply to alot of shops meaning you'll see the same stock in most shops. You can go there yourself and have a look at their supplies and even handpick what you want. I've forgotten where's this place as it has been a long time but i can check for you. Also there's another place called GOfish where they do stock thai goldies but i think they've closed down due to low sales and high rent (toorak rd). You can ask the oakleigh guy to import for you. He'll be happy to do it but you gotta bargain with this guy. Had to bargain till i ran out of saliva when i bought discus from him. Anyway, have stopped keeping goldies and have been keeping marine instead but i'm planning to do a goldfish setup again. |

WAH! exciting - got new source of goldfish - GoFish still around I must go and look see look see
Aquarium Industries / Aquatic Industries collapse already (Cantonese say chap lup) I think bankrupt or something like that Today went down to StKilda aquarium - same old fish - must be nobody buy all the left over stock... They were selling AA Grade tosakin for AUD$280! Don't mean to be nasty - but if you want to sell tosakin for so much money at least make sure the tosakin got no 'wen' |
