bloody hell, the planting campaign in my sump tank has infested my tank with snails. plant also must quarantine.....wah lao. nobody tell me leh.
and this tiny buggers kept coming back eventhough i kill more than 50 alr in 2 go. they just kept crawling back from no where. bought the Snail Stop potion to do them up once and for all with concentrated salt solution. I reckon it will take 2 weeks to rid them once and for all. LHS ask me to buy puffer fishes. tell them no thanks, i stick to snail posion. |

Take your fish out, pour in slightly higher concentration of copper safe for a few days. Not too sure will in destroy your filter but got to do it !!! Always qt your plants with copper solution and PP dip to prevent such incidents. Another way is to keep a small puffer fish, 1 will do the job. but puffer will die after the annihilation of snail population. Never put a puffer with goldfish. Anyway... in this application the Puffer is unlikely to live long as they are brackwater fish. Also... kekeke... how do you quarantin a puffer fish (long enough) before it dies and enters the sump tank to attack the snails? Oversized Linked Image (Click to Expand) |

I once accidentally jolted the tank so much it gave the puffer a big shock and it puffed! However, only the area under its chin was puffed instead of the whole fish. It died shortly after. I was told stress killed it, and shocking it to make it puff is sure to kill it. |

Just take the goldfish out, put in the puffer and let it live and die in there. |

aiya i not stupid.
Plan 1. Cut off the pump supply from sump tank to main tank, main tank will be aerated using sponge filter instead for 3 hrs. So sump tank water is disconnect with main tank. 2. Concoct concentrated salt solution and "KILL SNAIL" potion and wash it down in sump tank together with the filter element. 3. Let it soak for 3 hrs. 4. Remove all filter element into pail. Siphon main tank water to wash down the filter elements. kill off any tiny crawlers remaining in the sump tank. 5. Dump all filter mat and sponge filter in case the eggs are still attached there. replace all filter elements back in sump tank. 6. Introduced de-chlorinated tap water into sump tank via main tank. start sump pump again. 7. Repeat process after 1 week. any comment on my SNAIL Massacre compaign?? can work..... |

I'm a lazy person, so here's my strategy to rid the snails.
1. Move all fishes into a tub. Aerate it strongly especially if it's a small tub. 2. Disconnect the pump and sump. 3. Discard all the water, filter media and of course the plant. 4. Let the tank and sump dry for a day. 5. Go shopping for cool sponge filters. Get 4. 6. Select 2 good fishes from that tub and cull the rest. It's effectively a new setup without troublesome sump and filtered by good'ol sponge with correct fish load. Nonit to worry (much) about water parameters leow. |

wah liew... if that's the case, why not simply clean up the sump and dry it for say 1 week? or if more ks, PP bomb the sump then dry. or add hot water then dry??

Nonit to worry (much) about water parameters leow. somehow i get the feeling that u keen to see me cull my fishes. the same way u did not give up on yr fries so earily, i too not prepare for this drastic measures also. besides i like my fishes but just not the snail. plants long gone alr. fish load alr down to 6 now with 4 in green water at anyone time. so left with 2 miserable ones in main tank. nitrate never exceed 40ppm. more sponge filters in tank don't work miracle to water parameters. though not "much" to worry but still need diligent water change routine right. there is no short cut so i learn sump and sponge serve their purposes, not prepare to get into the debate on which is best . nonetheless i only using sponge filter as complementing aerating system to existing sump setup. the same reason applies when u use IOS with sponge filter i believe. |
