I only know marine ppl use "live" lava rock for their aquarium setup... There are always "extras" because some organisms reside in such rocks... and also such "live" lava rock only thrive in salted water. I believe the "correct colour" for live rock is purple

I am not sure if such rock will be suitable for clear water aquarium. But I believe there are many other substitutes (eg broken flower pots) that can be used since your intention is only to grow plants.

rocks should be fine after a wash.., but dirt might accumulate at the rocks

as for ios.. y not u get one of those Fibre glass filters with chambers instead? requires the fibre glass "tank", filter matts, and a pump..

something like this
