Growth Rate (diff. between indoors/outdoors) Options

What is the missing element in keeping ranchu indoors compared to outdoor ponds or farms?Seems to be growing slower than those kept in outdoor ponds.

IMO green water.Free floating algae rich in protein for growth and carotene for colouration.They also seems to be eating algae from walls 24/7.Maybe higher DO level also helps.

but i read somewhere that even japs keep their babies in crystal clear water and look at their fishes?!so...which is which?do we have a standard keeping practise?

There's little doubt that green water is good especially when you do it right.

But then maybe the lord is overlooking one thing when comparing keeping goldfish indoors vs outdoors -- the volume of (clear or green) water.

Try placing your overstocked 2 ft tank outdoors and I'm sure the fishes won't benefit much from being 'outdoors' except perhaps getting a little sun (and whatever effect you could derive from tanning your fishes.)

My point is you can achieve quick and large growth too if you keep your fish indoors in a tank of same volume as one positioned outdoors.

Feed only frozen bloodworms (watch the amount), change 100% of water at least once a week and they'll grow.

I won't even put in any bio-filtration; just a couple of air-stones should do nicely.

well...believe it or not...i siphon all the ranchu poos every day and when i'm at home..scared dirty?dat's y i do 50% water change every 3 days cycle.Still no fight in growth rate of a friend;s ranchu who is a month younger than mine!

If by "dirty" you mean the ugly sight of the poos, yah... you'll see them lying around. I think it's not hard to get used to the sight. In fact, it provides a visual indication to the state of health of your fish. They are short and chunky if the fish is healthy and not overfed.

But if by "dirty" you meant the water parameters is bad, don't forget that ammonia is not caused by decaying poos alone -- goldfish pees invisibly too, and a "clean" tub isn't necessary free of ammonia.

To get a correct conclusion you should compare both the fishes from the same spawn. Your friends' fish may be genetically/enviromentally superior.
