hi, I just bought an Oranda and I'm not too sure on how much to feed. It seems to be eating as much as I give. I give about five pellets 3 times a day. Is it too little? But it has such a FAT stomach, I'm quite afraid it'd burst.

Secondly, I'm not sure when I should change the water. I still don't know how to get green water. I did put water under the light for a few hours everyday but it did not turn green. Currently, the method I use is to change the water every three or four days. I would only change half of the water. And the water that I put in has been kept overnight.

Also, I'm not sure of when to clean the whole tank. Like once a month? I know that goldfishes are quite intolerant of ammonia.

PS. How come there are only "bros" here, why no sisters? I'm a girl but I still like goldfishes and I hope that next time I can rear more fishes. I think they are soooo cute!!! so chubby and fat!

On the issue of feeding, try putting food and allow the fish to consume that amount in 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat it 2 to 3 times a day. You mentioned an Oranda. Does it mean only one fish? If so not very good for goldfish. They need company.

To answer your second question, you need to tell us if you have any gravel in your tank or is it a plain tank setup. What filter you are using if any etc.

Your third query is related to the second.

On the issue of why no girl in this forum, I think you can better answer it. What gives you the impression that we are all "bros". Just like keeping bird, I do not see any lady keeping birds.

Suggest you spend some time reading up the old threads and most of the answers to your questions will be found.

For goldfish keeping, most do not use gravel. But if you really do, please remember the following points:
1. use small sized gravel so that the feed do not get stuck within the gravel
2. if you must use3 larger sized gravel, then mix some smaller sized gravel to fill up the gaps so that food do not get stuck in the gravel.
3. the water must circulate through the gravel either by using an undergravel filter system, using a powerhead or aeration to drive it. The other is a special heater meant for under gravel filter system.
4. mix some coral chip similar in size to your gravel or you might want to use size 0 to 3 coral chip as your filter medium.
5. always wash your gravel thoroughly before you use them.
6. soak the gravel in very strong salt solution for a day or 2 then rinse it before use.

Gravel, pebbles or any kind of ornamental stones are not very recommended for a goldfish setup. They trap bacteria and cleaning them would be so troublesome. And especially for GFs, the waste produced is hugh. Yes, gravel can be used as filter medium (but rather ineffective) and maybe good to look at. However, weighing out the pros and cons, the side effects are simply way too much over any benefit that gravel brings. Hence, most of the more experienced hobbyists here do not use ornament stones.

Keep your setup as simple and effective as possbile. You can refer to this tank setup thread for info of how you can better set up your tank.

ok, I've took out the gravel yesterday. Do you suppose it's all right to put a plant in the tank? I mean the plant can use the fish poo as fertiliser right? And when washing the tank, do you think I should wipe away the slimy stuffs clinging onto the glass. I mean, it could be good bacteria that has the potential to develop green water.

If you had noticed from the "pics of tanks" thread,most of us here do not keep plants.In fact,most are bare tanks for reasons that some of fellow members had explained.
Somehow I feel that plant is OK (they use the end product nitrate as fertiliser,not poo) but goldfishes tends to nibble on them and rotted parts tends to choke up the pump and filter.Plants and goldfishes dont mix,unless you need them to trap eggs when breeding.
Planted tanks per se is a joy to watch,and most would use tetra (hope I'm right) is they want to include fish.See this link,it made me drool
