This is not a discussion neither is it rubbish talk but just my point of view with regards to etiquette.Neither is this post directed at anyone.

Many a times we have a situation whereby a forumer posts his fish for one reason or another only for someone to ask - "How much did you pay for it?"

Things are always sensitive when in comes to money.I am sure that you don't say hello to someone you've just met and then ask "so how much do you earn a month", right? Unless you grew up in Timbuktu, of course.

You may tell yourself "no harm asking what, if he deem it private he will not answer lor", but to me it puts the other party in an awkward situation whereby by not answering your question he may be perceived as snobbish.

There are a host of reasons why some may not like to disclose the price of their purchase:
1)He buys very cheap fish and do not wish people to perceive him as a poor man or a cheapskate
2)He buys expensive fish but is afraid that by revealing the price people will think that he has been suckered (carrot head or chai tow)
3)He buys expensive fish and by letting everyone know(when asked) people may think that he is a show off.
4)He may have got a very good discount from the shop because the boss is his friend and by revealing the cheap price it may be "misleading" info in some sense

Normally if a forumer does not mind letting others know the price he will disclose it in advance.Such as "Got this piece for $35 from.......comments pls".

I am not saying that you cannot enquire the price of the fish.It is perfectly OK to ask.You may have bought a similiar piece and would like to compare the price of your purchase and his, for eg.Or maybe just a plain kaypoh. But PLEASE, do it in private.PM the owner your request. It is much more polite this way and if the owner chooses to keep the purchase price private he will make his intention known to you in private so it will save both parties some embarrasement in a way.

Okie dokie guys??????????? smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

sounds reasonable, let me think harder; slightly off topic, but how about asking him from where did he buy the fish?

Thats OK, but then again there are some shops unofficially known as con shops here and if the owner reveals that he has purchased it from the shop he may be concerned that people will think that he has been suckered.

So if he chooses not to answer your question people may perceive that he does not like to share.

But then again such scenarios are very rare so its perfectly OK to enquire on the source of fish IMO.

If I name the shop I may subject myself to legal action.

If I dont name the shop people may not get it.

If I choose not to answer people will think I am selfish and refuse to share.

Answer die don't answer also die.Another type of question to avoid. sad.gif

Scan thru the old posts la.......I'm sure you already know it more or less.

bro lau, tongue.gif
i declared i am a cheapo that buy cheap fish. blush.gif
i declared i ve no discount for the cheap fish i buy bec they are mostly in "leftover, discarded and nobody bothered" tanks/tub. laugh.gif
i also know the 6 fishes i own cost less than 1 showgrade i used to own. wink.gif
i advocate " why pay more." if i am not into competition. laugh.gif

price is sensitive as what u said, but there are always new and keen members who like to know or as part of "benchmarking". the choice is up to the owner to disclose or not. pressure should not be on owner to disclose and there is certainly no obligation to do so. what others perceive u is another matter. i am sure if they hang around here long enough they will know that Judgement of one's character is not based on whether he disclosed the price, shop name or not.

Ah Tan,

Thank you for your input. What I am trying to put across is that if you want to enquire on the price of the fish, PM the owner instead of asking in the open.

Owner who dont mind letting people know the cost would usually have declared it in the first place, like you. Heh heh heh.

i know but
curiosity always kill the cat. somethimes finger is faster than the brain nowadays. etiquette is NOT easily cultivated.

so when someone do pop up again and ask, we can do the following with no qualms.

a. NOT reply. (if u don't mind projecting and implying u are rude)

b. Tell him off like "Buzz off , it is up to me to know and u to find out. "

c. one can says a range and place if need be to wearn off the persistence. or pplp who buy in the place pays abt $XXX for this piece.

hey it is a public forum everybody and anybody is entitled to their views and what they think and choose to think as long as we agree to respect the disagreement that may arise.
