Hi Bros,
Crime: Stealing and killing fishes. Victims: TVRs and Black Butterfly. Crime scene: Caught inside the tank trying to escape. Heroine: My 82 yr old mother! This bird return a second time, yesterday, to commit its crime again but it was caught. Took 3 of my goldfish in its stomach, left one dead and two injured. Last crime it took one. Smart criminal, when upon inspection of criminal it "play dead" laying on the ground with its head tilted to one side, beak open and one wing spread out. It fooled me and my mom. However, when I move its beak it woke up and try to escape. All bros do protect your precious fishes aganist this guy. Sadly CH Leong |

QUOTE(desireless @ Tue, 15 Feb 2005 1:40 pm) Prosecutor (my parents): Death sentence by Khmer rouge style. i.e. suffocation by plastic bag. Defence: Because of negligence on my part and bird put up a sly defence by looking pathetic. Verdict: Release When I heard about it over the phone, I can't wait to get home and "han tum" it into pieces. But looking at it (see the picture again) it behaving within its nature and looking for its food. And truly it was my fault that I failed to cover the tank properly. However, if it return again I shall invite you for roasted Kingfisher for dinner. Rgds CHLeong |

QUOTE(CHLeong @ Tue, 15 Feb 2005 2:21 pm) CH Leong, it is very gallant of you to release it. Cannot blame the bird cause it is just looking for food (tan chia). Maybe next time you should make a more secure cover over your pond. Anyway this gives you an opportunity to stock up on better quality ranchus. TVR season coming soon, just be a little patient. I think after the Yuhua competition, thee will be many people selling their ranchu. Only 2 more weeks to wait. |

It is very kind of you to have released the bird.
I was told by one goldfish-keeping veteran that bird do have this habit of going back to the same location to hunt for food. So once it has identify your place as a good food-hunting grounds, it is likely that it will fly back again the next time. I do hope the ordeal it went through discouraged it from doing so again. |

Some of my ranchus also fell prey to relatives of this bugger ... cant wait to land my hands on them.
As mentioned earlier by desireless ... they come back everyday to the same spot waiting for just one chance to feast on the fishes once I forget to cover the FGTs. : |

Hi CH Leong
I admire your act that despite the bird has preyed upon your fish you have released this villian. Perhaps you should have released it far away in another part of the country as far as you can go to break his orientation of home coming.I have lost a couple of my ranchu babies to this pest birds initially without knowing it till I find carcasses lying on the ground(I know goldfish unlike koi don't jump)I had unknowingly blamed it on the neighbour's cat,or some stray cats as well as monitor lizards till I saw the blatant act commited before my very eyes. A bird(resemblig a kingfisher) swopped down upon the helpless fish and carried it with its beak with much accuracy.(Scene only found in national geographic channel)Now I have to net my pond to deter their harassment and feeding.Any bros have other ideas to deter such an act? regards goldrush |

Think a bird net might do the trick ... it is actually a very fine net with rather large holes (but not big enuf for bird to fly thru). The birds will get trapped and entangled when attemp to dive down for their catch.

It is a beautifully colored bird even though it is a thief. What is a TVR?
I wish I could keep my goldfish outside but I have to contend with bears, raccoons and the king heron that lives in the swamp near me. Jo |
