Hi guys,
I'm new here and I've tried making green water. Can u guys comment if i'm on the right track here? Set up is a 55 litre plastic tub filled with about 30 litre dechlor water (i used Stress coat, the one with aloe vera in it, does the aloe vera affects the cultivation at all?), 2 feeder fish each about 10-12 cm long, a new airstone, and a little 8 wat "daylight" bulb to keep the light going at night time. I put the tub outside under a uv filtered plastic shading and it received sunlight about 9-10 hours a day. On the first 7 days there was no reaction at all, meaning the water was fairly clear and never got to the stage of "murkiness" in desireless' indoor green water cultivation method. But by the 8th day suddenly the poo became dispersed and debris started floating around much like day 3-6 of desireless' pictures. By the 9th day green tinge started to appear. the rest u guys can see from the pics: Day 8 Day 9 Day 11 What do u guys think? cheers & thx a lot |

I am very sure to say you had the green because of the routine sunlight you've been giving to this first brew.
The electrical setup (8 watt lamp) is not enough to to keep the green water going on. When you have a second brew and above. With water filled up, algae at the bottm of tub will not get the brightness required. There will be a stage when the algae gets too green and the algae at the top level will block light from going to bottom level. |

I'm not doing it indoor though, it's outdoor. And I'm gonna transfer the greenwater in to a 120 litre wide plastic tub with depth max about 20 cm.

Green water has no problem striving in outdoor conditions.
The article which I have written is meant for indoor cultivation. For hobbyists who do not have access to outdoor environment (an outdoor pond, tub). Most local hobbyists (in Singapore) stay in high rise buildings and owning outdoor ponds is almost impossible. The step of keeping the light on at night is unnecessary. Plant and fishes have a life-clock themselves. So there need a time when they will need rest. The light will disturb their rest. The Green in your experiment looks good. You can now transfer this newly-achieved brew as the seeding volume for your new outdoor tub |

I've managed to grow some greenwater (about 30 litre in volume) and intend to have it as the seed for a bigger tub i'm going to set up (about 120-130 litre volume, max 20 cm deep). The tub is going to be placed outdoors.
My question is is it ok to put one or two sponge filters (y'know, the one that needs air bubbles to operate) with the greenwater or is it enough just using a couple of airstones? If using sponge filters, I'm planning to wash the sponge clean once a week (during water change) in order to prevent the BB from establishing & competing with the green water for nutrients. Thx in advance for the help |

your sponge filter will get choked very quickly..
just use airstones. 120L is abit risky, watch the temperture during hot days. |

thx a lot, just airstone it is then.
Yup i know it's a bit small, and i'll watch the temp very closely. One more question, is it ok also to put some duckweed in it (contained within one of those floating plastic baskets, of course)? or will duckweed adversely affect the ability of the greenwater to re-establish after water change? cheers |

Alternatively, you can do without the airstone.Just weight down the airline with something heavy.
You need not feed duckweeds. The algaes are already rich enough in nutrients and fibre. |

Thx for replying guys really appreciate it.
I think airstone is better cos of more movement on the surface of the water so the greenwater already supplement all of the fibres my fish needs? can i still feed them veggies like peas, zucchini, etc? |

Wash your airstones thoroughly every week with tap water. It is a good place for BB to thrive.
Of course you can still feed veggies. But a diet of only pellets is adequate enough. |
