"Coelacanth" (pronounced as see-la-kanth) is a prehistoic fish that existed 400 millions years ago. Interestingly, a few were caught by fishermen in the last century. They were mostly found Comoro Islands. About 4 were caught off Sulawesi, Indonesia. I was watching Channel U in which one taiwanese artiste goes to Indonesia in search of this fish. I was laughing in disbelief that they actually had a budget for such mission impossible. |

Not exactly mission impossible. They were filmed near the shores of Indonesia before.
This fish lives in the deep waters, found mostly near Africa. It was discovered only in the 1930s'.Human knew they exist from the fossils, but we do not know that they are actually still alive till the 30s. More info here. http://www.dinofish.com/ |

The last of this fish found in Indonesia and documented was in 1999. This guy typically rushes to Indonesia hoping to find the fish alive. And he actually expects to find it in just one trip. It will be an insult to the scientists who went there and came back empty handed many times
I was thinking if he can go there and find one so easily then the fish is not rare anymore. BTW, there is a video clip on this dinofish site which I find to be quite faked... Direct Link: http://www.dinofish.com/cimages/Coel1.mpg Too clear to be true |

Nope, not faked. I saw one video where the fish was swimming and the video was as clear as that one. In fact, if u go to dinofish.com and look at the tab on the left where it got the coelacanth picture, that's taken from the video.
They're not as rare as you think. It's just they live in places too hard too reach and the whole "dinofish" and "living fossil" hype that ppl think the fish is super-rare or sumtin |

For certain, I do not hope that the clip is faked. I read about Coelacanth when I was very young and grew a hugh interest in it - Back in the 80's. That was the time when Coelacanth were not so commonly found. How ecstatic I was when I read that they actually made so many findings in the late 90s!!
For one thing I'm sure of... If I go scuba diving and sees one as large as the one in picture above, I would swim for my life as quickly as I could. No time to be awed by such sightings. |

fascinating what the deep sea holds. our knowledge about the creatures in the Ocean barely skims the surface.
I'm sure there are 100ft sharks down there as well as some dinosaurs that gave evolution a miss and stayed there and stayed massive. I hope all this will be revealed to me the day I die and meet my maker. |

A truely interesting documentary on prehistoric sea creatures is "Sea Monster". This is a documentary made by BBC and can still be found in many video stores locally. It mentioned a "Megalodon" a great white shark which looked closest to the ones we see today but measuring between 12 - 15m (40 - 50 ft).
http://www.sharkattacks.com/prehistoric.htm In it, the narrator mentioned that it is possible that we can still find this fish since it is the most vicious villians in the seas and it is imposible that it became extinct. And the fact that Coelacanths can still be found now... Go buy the video. Some 12.99 only. The way they film it is enjoyable. They have one adventurer travelling back in time to the different prehistoric eras and going into the seas, hunting for these monsters. Not to be missed. |

QUOTE(peter porker @ Sun, 04 Dec 2005 2:49 pm) fascinating what the deep sea holds. our knowledge about the creatures in the Ocean barely skims the surface. I hope all this will be revealed to me the day I die and meet my maker. Amen to that, mate. Better still, I wish I'm still alive when they really find some massive dinosaurs/prehistoric creatures. Solid evidence now that the giant squid does exist, now it's only a matter of time till they find that 100ft shark |
