i've search through this forum and have no luck finding any info about fish's age. I was wondering how can we tell fish's age depending on their size?? Is the any standard size = particular age?. I assume different bread such as Ryukin and ranchu may have slight different in size. Ranchu would be slightly longer than ryukin. How can me compare the two fishes and tell their age?? --> (apple vs lemon)

No, size is subjected to handling, genetic and varieties of fish.. Not a guide to age.
you will hv to ask the supplier or the actual farm owner when was the estimated period of spawning. |

I once checked with a LFS on the age of the fish but yield no clear answer (don't think they will know as most fishes are imported without a birthcert , not like Arowana which comes with certificate). I remember reading somewhere the scientific way of finding out the age of a fish is thorugh examining the no. of rings found on the fish scales. Maybe experts here can shade further lights on this topic. |

However, might not be as accurate as the documentation of such measurement is not well defined. With over 3 major varieties, 600+ sub variations, not going to be easy. |

The concentric circle viewed from the scale is only accurate in temperate countries where seasons varies. The width of the rings correspond to the growth spurts which coincide with the summer growing months in these zones. But in the tropics everyday is a growth day and probaby you cant really tell as there is no clear width demarcation of the rings in each scale.Hope I am not wrong in writing.this....

Yep, scales are not an accurate way of determining age. The most accurate is by using the fish's otolith (ear-bone). Dunno how they do it but it's gotta be done in the lab. U'll get a very accurate result with that particular method.

Oh yes otolith measurement is another form of estimation of fish age. However I think you need to slaughter the fish to achieve such measurement as the otolith is actually the earstone behind the brain of all bony fishes. The principle is the same as in the counting the annuli (concentric circle)of fish scale or annual rings of the tree.Under reflective light one can see alternate transluscent area which represent growth spurts and opaque areas which represent period of lull growth very much like the annuli seen .
Below is a picture of what I'm trying to say |
