I'm curious to know what you guys feed your fish, how many times a day, and what advantages you had from this routine.

I feed Tetra Gold Medal as the main food twice a day in small quantities [I use the Growth and Color enhancer], and feed blood worms and green peas usually later in the day. I also fast the fish for one day each week to avoid swim bladder.

As for advantages, this worked into helping some of my fish grow but didn't work with others for an unknown reason [could be from the water]. I couldn't find Hikari products in this country so there isn't much to experiment with... sad.gif

I may have a more unusual feeding method than you guys.

For tubs that I intend to change water daily, I feed the fish in it mainly with frozen bloodworms. I estimate each fish gets at least 3 to 4 large-cube hikari per day, and I don't even bother defrosting but drop them into the tub frozen solid and let the "vitamin added water" melt into the water. The fishes get pumped up quickly -- but 100% daily water change for these tubs.

For my normal tank where I change water twice a week (100% too each time!), I'd feed Hikari Lionhead and some frozen bloodworms. The amount of pellets is quite large and frequent. Sorry... it's hard to describe the amount per fish and the frequency is... as often as I like but at least 3-4 times a day.

For my display tank, I'd feed both types of Tetra medal gold (growth and colour) a 'normal' amount 2 times a day. The fishes in the display tank are there not for long so slightly starving them won't kill or retard them. This sparsely stock display tank is very clean... but still at least 50% water change a week.

So it all boils down to how much trouble I want to go through when it comes to maintaining the water quality and what I want out from the fishes.

Green peas are fed once a week to all... provided I remember to do it! biggrin.gif

I don't starve my fish to "cleanse" their system, however.

To add my 2 cents on various kinds of goldfish pellets...

In my opinion, they're all the same. Some, such as JBL's Goldperls, may have extra ingredients (the Goldperls contains 10% spirulina!) but... these are just marketing gimmick. I seriously doubt anyone can tell in my face the gimmick really works! Others like JRL and Chroma have higher than normal amount of proteins... but too much of anything is no good.

So... to me it all boils down to how messy the pellets are and the cost. To this end, many will agree that Hikari Lionhead is the ideal choice. Best of all, it's the sinking type which, IMO, is preferred for goldfish so prone to SB problem.

HappyBuddha, I used to change water 100% daily and thought it was working fine but someone at some other forum 2 years ago told me that this is wrong and it stresses the fish and can lead it to death etc...so I stopped using this method and stuck to cycling tanks only.

How long have u been using this method and did u face any trouble? Because if you didn't I would love to go back doing this as it was easier for me!

It seems from reading both your post and CyberET hikari lionhead is essential, I just wish if I can find them sold here! sad.gif

I feed all my tanks and ponds 2x daily, 3 or 4x on the weekends. tongue.gif

I mostly feed Hikari frozen bloodworms, krill, and mysis shrimp. I feed pro-gold pellets when I am late for work. biggrin.gif

I feed spiralina flakes as a treat 1 or 2x per week. I also feed peas as treat when I remember.

I do 50% water changes once per week. Clean filters every week, but not the same day as water changes.

I used to feed pellets more often, but I discovered that pellets cause too much poop. I realized that lots of poop means lot's of filler in pellets. Whole foods are better in that the fish utilizes more and so less poop. good_very.gif

The fry eat live daphnia or Hikari frozen baby brine shrimp. All they can eat, all day long.

hmmm... i do 98% change every 2 weeks depending on the green
for the overstocked 2ft tank, i do 80-100% change every 3-4 days

a little hikari spiralina is fed to those fishes in the indoor tank to maintain their color as well

100% daily change can be done if water parameters doesn't swing too much..(a day in different country is too much) tongue.gif

maybe u would like to check the pH and temperature before proceeding with the change, daily

erm.. stress depends on how u handle the fish i think..

i do daily water changes for some of my fishes in qurantine as well
i think the thai breeders do daily water changes unsure.gif

I rotate pellet brand and type between Hikari Lionhead Gold(S), Oranda Gold(F), Medi Super Gold(S), Medi Gold(F), Medi ?? (blue package for koi). I usually open a pack and finish it before going into the next brand so on, takes about 3 weeks to finish a 350g pack. This are for breakfast only, I feed pellet meals once a day.

On the day before water change day ( once a week 90% change ) everyone gets an extrat cube of Hikari Frozen Blood worm. Once or twice a week in the evening they get a green pea or roman lettuce snack.

My idea of an all rounded diet smile.gif

May I know what do the bracket S and F stand for?
