hi bros,
i have a 4 feet tank with Two 2.5 inch ranchu. one of them eats much faster than the other one. i am contemplating puting up a partition to seperate them and feed separately. in this way, the water volume is the same but the swimming space is halved. Do u guys think the growth rate will be reduced or remains the same? MCQ question: a) growth rate increase b) growth rate decreae c) remains the same d) none of the above. Anyway, without the partition the growth of the slower fish will be limited by food. by seperating them using such a partition, the food is no longer a limiting factor assuming i feed as usual. my guess other factors will come in. my selection is ©. long long ago, read about Alvin lim's question about sea fish cage. A fish kept in a enclosure..e.g a sea cage will grow at the same rate as if it is swimming in the open sea assuming food is not a factor. Paiseh, got a another question: Will the water depth(my is about 15 inch..38 cm) limit the headgrowth development of a 2.5 inch fish which already have some signs of buffalo-head growth? thanks in advance, jason. |

a partition will retard the natural flow of the water pump n reduces the effectiveness of the filter...leave the Tank as it is without partition

Hi Jason,
If that's what Mr Alvin Lim says then it couldn't be wrong. Growth rate will not be affected by reducing their swimming space if the water volume remains the same. Anyway, for the partition, I hope you mean this type of porous divider. Else it defeats the purpose of sharing the same water volume. ![]() Also, you will need 2 autofeeders to feed each fish in both partitions. 1 - 1+half feet of water height is ok |

thanks for the replies, the partition i intend to use is something like what bro desireless has shown which will still allow smooth flow of water.

QUOTE(dragonhart @ Thu, 06 Apr 2006 1:44 pm) b) growth rate decreae ![]() Reason: goldfish needs plenty of space, if you half your tank and house each seperately, each will see a 2ft tank (rather then having a 4ft swimming space). This is like keeping a fish in a 2 ft tank seprately. Here we are talking about space as a limiting factor, 4ft tank is already a bare minimum for goldfish. Alvin Lim's theory about a cage in a sea is debatable. I am not sure he mention how big is the cage w.r.t the fish and whether space is a limiting factor in a cage. ![]() Food becomes secondary (not limiting) if you feed sufficiently. Don't think is a problem having to feed enough for 2 fishes in a tank. ![]() So, my advise, don't half your tank, just feed so that both have more then enough.. ![]() |

Or maybe hand feed ur slower-eater with a piece of straw (put the pellets thru the straw and hold the other end near its mouth)

I have a suggestion, only separate them when you feed them.

hahaha...interesting solution. i have put up a partition and will monitor their growth(weekly) compared to another 4 feet with 2X2.5 inch ranchu. if the two ranchus in the 4 feet tank with partition shows significantly slower growth compared to the other two , i will think of something else. at the meantime, this slower ranchu is having its fill..
thanks for all your contribution/discussion. jason. QUOTE(d_golem @ Thu, 06 Apr 2006 6:41 pm) |

I have a suggestion, feed them with some smaller pellet.
