You do not need filter in Green water. The algae will eat away the waste under sunlight. Filter will also impede the growth of green water algae

Well, first attempt at cultivating indoor green water unsucessful
Tried using the fishless method but scooped lots of poop from my other tank to transfer over plus suuplemented with some Hikari food pellets. Used a 55W PL light which was pretty much switched on 24hrs a day for the last 7 days. End result was just dirty water. Trying again with two small goldfish. Anyone willing to donate some green water as seed so I can skip the stress to my goldfish? . Willing to pick it up from you at your convenience |

Was trying to hasten the whole process. Will try with 12 hours of lighting. Hope for success this time but if anyone wants to donate some green water, I would be most obliged

Looks like second attempt unsuccessful. Have a 2 ft tank with water half filled, two small goldfish with good aeration and 1 55W PL lights. I see brown algae or maybe its just dirt accumulating on the bottom and sides of the tank. No sign of green water on the 6th day. One of the goldfish died today . Sounded easy but having real difficulties cultivating green water indoors so far. Any pointers from the experts?

You have to be patient.....not everyone gets their greenwater working in the same period of time....some get in 6,8,12 & i got it working in 14days. You have to wait and more importantly try to cleanout the wall algae....as mentioned here many times it will compete with algae in the greenwater. |

Ok will keep it going. Stupid question, how do you remove the brown algae?
Also thinking of trying an outdoor one as well. Any concern on rain changing the water conditions and affecting the fish? |

Any concern on rain changing the water conditions and affecting the fish? Well the best way i find is to empty out the water in a bucket or tub. Then you can wipe the algae off the walls and refill with that same water. Outdoors is the best way to do if you get direct sunlight for atleast 4-5hrs. Dont worry rain/cloudy weather wont effect your greenwater. Last week i had rain/cloudy sky for 5days str8....still greenwater going good. YOu will only have most problems getting your 1st batch of greenwater once you get that by 3 or 4th batch your greenwater should be well established. Which means your greenwater algae is strong and the water gets green faster. Goodluck |

OK thks for the words of advice. Just put in 2 mudsuckers to clean away the brown algae, have taken out the other goldfish as I think he is quite stressed out.
Read somewhere that in some countries, the rain water is quite acidic so it is not good for fish ponds as it will drastically change the pH of the water. Hope its not a problem here. |
