How To Convert An Eheim 2213 To A Bio-filter... Options

Im currently using an eheim 2213 external filter. im thinking of modifying it to work as a bio-filter, can anyone advise on the modification that i should made. i.e. What kind of filter media i should change inside the filter, and the sequence of placement of the filter media within the canister.

Even though with the external filter, i still see some poos floating within the tank, can i add in another 2 "guppy" sponge filter to solve my problems.


Can anyone please kindly offer some help...

You can add more sponge filters if you like, as long as you don't feel them unsightly

For your eheim 2213, you can follow the Eheim manual recommendation. However, if you find the recommended material too ex, you can follow my recommendation

1st layer (from the bottom):- ceremic rings, the smaller the better, fill up to 1/2
2nd layer:- Blue or Black sponge (course)
3rd layer:- Coral chips, fill 1/4
4th layer:- White foam (fine)

Gohks Thanks for sharing the above information, just interested to know why have you gone with the above set-up. If you can just elaborate a little on the purpose each layer serves? That will help in understanding ......thanks

Purpose: For bio and corse filtration, water flow through will be spread and debrics particles will be trapped efficently (if you understand fluid dynamic). Also act as a residence for BB.
2nd layer:- Blue or Black sponge (course)
Purpose: Trap those escape big particles and debrics, act as secondary bio purpose.
3rd layer:- Coral chips, fill 1/4
Purpose:- For bio and buffering
4th layer:- White foam (fine)
Purpose:- Trap those fine ones before your water leaves and return to tank

No hard and fuss rules, some people tend to do it differently.

If you have 1/2 full of ceremic rings and 1/4 fill of coral chips, one piece each of sponge and foam will almost make your canister full. The most you can sqeeze is one more piece of white foam at the top to have double mechanical effect. The thing you also need to consider is the bio load (the no. of fishes and the frequency of feeding) on whether to have the addition mechanical filter (white foam). If you run a relatively clean tank, you can have more of the white foam. On the other hand, if you run a heavy loaded tank, my advise is you have less as to minimize choking and poor flow efficiency resulting in frequent cleaning of your canister filter and defeat the purpose of having a bio setup. Hope this clarify your doubt )
