Calico, Another variegated addition Options

A calico is by definition, having sections or patches colored differently and usually brightly according to the dictionary.Although this is not a typical edonishiki with the usual splendour of colours,OMO ,the way it carries itself ,together with its body conformation more than make up for the former shortfall.Even a conspicuous spicule overgrowth at its dorsal end of its caudal fin fail to deter me from purchasing this specimen as its is easily removable without much recurrence.Unlike my previous calico which is inadequate in its headgrowth,this one shows promising wen development at its tender age.This male is closed to 5 inch and definite to add some colors to my already overstocked collection.I know Sabine would be thrilled to see another calico in this forum.Please enjoy

Almost 6 months have passed since I last post about this edonishiki.This morning,I had the opportunity to fish it out into an enamel basin for a visual topview update.The red has intensify.Infact it has almost invaded the whole base color.The black streaks are vivid and bold.Need I say more of its headgrowth?
I'm quite satisfy by its progress.What about you?Coming to 6 inch,this beast has been fed 2 meals of tubifex(live) with hikari saki/lionhead as basics alternate with frozen bloodworms daily.

How come I missed this post in the fall? I must have been busy with my fry.
This calico was beautiful back then, but you managed to put real colour and so much wen on her . Nice big fish - I'll take it anytime
I finally found a source of frozen bloodworms, expensive, but I'm giving it a try to put some colour and wen on my young ranchu. She'll get more of those once summer arrives and she can go outside into green water.

The last time,I showed this fish was some 4months back.Now some 9 months under my care,this beast has almost changed into a RED LEOPARD .His wen has blossomed into a ehhhhhhh........ cauliflower?????
His color with its dominant blood red hue contrast magnificently with its ink blacked spots.This fish was on 6 months diet of live tubi,alternate with high protein pellets and rich source of home grown algae.

I have recently switched back to frozen bloodworms for fear of it putting too much FAT

I just love its headgrowth which resembles a flowerhorn hump. Or that old bald chinese deity that usually laughing and carrying a stick. Makes the fish looks more "human"
How big is it now?and how do you remove the growth on its caudal fin?

Kekeke you mean the God of Longevity




I have not measured it precisely but I think it should be near 7 inch

And the spicule that stick out of the dorsal root of tail was just snipped off without any sign of regrowth nor scarring


I think the headgrowth can be due to combination of factors.Genetics which is beyond our control and factors which are within our control namely
1) Water conditions
2)Feed......Worms and algae


Here are another two calico which are showing growth spurts of their wens.Though not as significant,you can see the raised areas which form the crown which I hope will proliferate as in the red piece.I can't be sure

I got one Thai red cap that got that spicule thingy exactly like yours. So it's safe to just, snip it off, then?

Ur calicos r so beautiful btw. I've decided me next fish is gonna be a calico ranchu, and I think it's gonna be a while before I find one half as the quality as yours in OZ

I want a calico one too. I wish I could find one with this quality in US before I retire (I am now in my late twenties. lol)
