The new Seven Wonders of the World
Aw come on............. The Christ Redeemer (Brazil)? And the Taj Mahal (India)? I have always been fascinated by the so called seven wonders as a kid, (and I always thought that Eiffel Tower and Leaning Tower were amongst them), but this round of VOTING (yes, By VOTES??????) does not do justice to the many historical sites in my opinion. No doubt, the Redeemer and Mahal are Architectural and Construction masterpieces in their own right, but what they lack of are the history, the association with civilisation, the awe and more importantly the mystiques that other sites carry. You have to ask yourself "How on earth did they do it" and only then it will be a so-called "WONDER". My vote in place of these two shall be Stonehenge (England) and Statues of Easter Island (Chile).A very close tie in my voting will also include Angkor Wat and the Acropolis. Heck, even the historical Borobudur of Indonesia was not even mentioned. Pooi chao nua. |

Mayan pyramid in place of the Egyptian pyramid? My goodness! I really don't understand.
I will also take the Leaning Tower or Eiffel Tower over Christ Redeemer anytime. Religiously aside, how does the Christ Redeemer "wonder" anyone? So how long does this Seven Wonders status last? |

So how long does this Seven Wonders status last? Frankly, I have no clue. But the idea originated thousands of years ago, from a Greek if I am not wrong. The ORIGINAL seven wonders, also known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, has locations concentrated in the Mediterranean.Perhaps its because people cant travel afar back then. Here is the original list of the seven wonders, and only the Great Pyramids of Giza is left standing today. The original seven wonders |

very sad, that Egypt Pyramid is out, so many mystical stories, movies and not to mention the history behind this ancient city.
If to vote for castle wonder , i will vote for Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany. any time U know why Disney got the idea for sleeping beauty castle now. Probably the world first auto tap in Swan shape is invented. there. as much as i like USA, Austalia and France, the "modern building" will not earn my vote This post has been edited by white horse T1: Mon, 09 Jul 2007 9:50 pm |

as much as i like USA, Austalia and France, the "modern building" will not earn my vote Yup, same here. Out from my list of the finalists will include the Alhambra,Hagia Sophia, Japanese Kiyumizu temple,Russia's Kremlin,Germany's castle,Statue of Liberty, Timbuktu, and Sydney Opera House. Maybe Singapore should have submitted the Esplanade. |

Ya man.. Should have submited the Merlion too
I realise that most of the the ancient sculptures were destroyed by earthquakes and other natural disasters. Maybe if we were to erect a JUMBO Merlion now, it will still be around by next millennium and be hailed as an existing wonder then |

A pang of nostalgia gripped me as I recall the 7 wonders of the world in my mind.Almost everyone heard of them but few can recall the histories behind them. From the pyramids of Giza where pharaohs ruled to the 100 foot largest bronze statue ever made at Colossus of Rhodes, these are mankind most incredible architectural achievements.Few modern sculptures could match the massive statue of Zeus at Olympia which was the centre piece of holiest temple in Greece.Who can forget the hanging garden of Babylon built out of love by the great king, Nebuchadnezzar II.What about the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus which was filled with such rich historic significance even before Alexander the great conquered it.That lead me to recall the light house of Alexandria, built to guide ships through the labyrinth of sandbars that created havoc for merchants attempting to reach this port of Alexandria(Egypt).Last but not least,The temple of Artemis at Ephesus, built in honor of the Great Mother Goddess and in the words of the great Philo of Byzantium,”
I have seen the walls and Hanging Gardens of ancient Babylon, the statue of Olympian Zeus, the Colossus of Rhodes, the mighty work of the high Pyramids and the tomb of Mausolus. But when I saw the temple at Ephesus rising to the clouds, all these other wonders were put in the shade. Now when the new 7 wonders were revealed,I can only put on my shade and shake at these shapes…. PS :To me the voting is purely with commercial intent and not based on their historical significance...... |

Egypt what a fascinating country. u try just climbing up one stone at the pyramid, then u picure yrself 5000BC ago in the dessert. then u look at the height. confirm no. 1 7 wonder. how to lose this slot, bully countries with no internet ah... Er.....what do you mean by you have seen them all? bro, read it in full context lah |

It was written in the words of Philo ,a great Greek writer and engineer of Alexander's time which he described how he was awed and mesmerised by the magnificence of Epheus that dwarfed the other wonders which he compared. |

Kekeke.........
Anyway, this was what I was "taught" by my primary schoolteacher on what the 7 wonders consists of: 1)Pyramids 2)Hanging Gardens of Babylon 3)Great wall 4)Taj Mahal 5)Eiffel tower 6)Leaning tower of Pisa 7)Grand Canyon Grand Canyon seemed odd, cause its nature not man made.Apparently there were also some UNOFFICIAL lists of 7 natural wonders which consists of Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Angel Falls, Niagara Falls,Mount Everest etc......... |
