Dear Friends....
I have adopted 2 baby oranda 2 months ago. They are calico type and sakura type. Calico Oranda. Baby size. 10 cm. Junior size. 13-14 cm after 2 months. Sakura Oranda. Baby size. 10 cm. Junior size. 13-14 cm after 2 months. I grow them in the 2 m x 1 m tube. Feeding regime is 2x Bloodworm/day and 6x Mixed Pellets (Hikari Lionhead-Nozomi Wheatgerm-Lobster Pellets). I need comments for further developments. Anyway, which one has the better potential? Are they eligible enough to go for a show? Thanks. |

I like both very much, and IMO both are good enough for showing. But the sakura one's red patches look to be less vivid from 2 months ago.
Btw bro chandra, what u mean by 6x pellets feeding, is it 6x per day on top of the 2x bloodworms? |

Isn't that, like, a bit....too....much? 8x feeding per day? Even with smaller portions?

You can figure the bloodworms at 90% water content, so that's more like a snack than a meal. And with them swimming around in tropically warm water their metabolisms are working faster. That wheat-germ pellet is going to keep the flow moving thru those guts, too.

Hi All,
I'm sorry for being late to reply your comments. I'd been away out of town. Bro d_golem, Yes that is my (extreme) feeding regime. I am still learning whether my feeding regime is good/bad for the fish development. Bro Glass Goldfish, You're right. Wheat Germ are supposed to help the digestibility of the food. Also to help the scales' color and shiny. On the other hand, WG pellets will help the maturity of the eggs in female fish. Anyway, Which one is better, the Calico or the Sakura? Thanks |

Both are very nice but I prefer the Calico. I think the Sakura is a bit too white. They both have beautiful tails and fins

Sakura's headgrowth seems angular and positioned...... strange, like a flat fore-head. Can't tell---does he have pronounced cheek-growth?
Calico is awesome, love his moustache! If I had one wish for this fish I would ask for 20% more black in the tail/fins. |

i agree with d_golem the red scales seem less vivid later on. is it actually like this or is the fish further away from the side of the tank ?

Bro Glass Goldfish,
Here is the clearer picture of the Sakura: You can see that she has the cheek-growth too. Maybe its because its white-color. And this is the Calico one: Actually, I have the wish that there are more black on the tail and more blue on the body. Bro Tomo21, I think it's because sunshine shade? But, anyway, I think it's time to add some more color enhancer pellets. Thanks |

You guys once taught me that 'sakura' means cherry blossom - like pink. If I'm not mistaken, sakura have a mixture of metallic and nacreous scales and the red pigment embedded deep in the skin looks pink when seen below the clear nacreous scales. Yes, or no?

Me thought sakura fish is basically calico fish with no black or blue pigmentation, but bekko's description seems to make sense.

Yes, same thing, golem. All calico fish are nacreous scale so you see pigment under the scale instead of in the scale like metallic fish. What looks like blue is black pigment deep in the skin. What looks like black is black puigment at the surface of the skin (but still under the scale).

Yes, or no? -steve Correct. This is a good topic that has two fishes of very close colour patterns. It helps in differentiating between Calico and Sakura colours. To sidetrack a little, a lot of hobbyists thinks that only this type of colour can be considered calico. So when they see something like this they call it "sakura with black pokka dots", which is incorrect. To complicate things a little, many new colour types have been successfully bred by Tunghoi in recent years. The calico family is widen as a result. It is not surprising that a couple hobbyists that I know have confused tri-colour with calico. On fishes of Sakura colour pattern, somtimes they do appear in a combinaiton of nacreous + metallic, and sometimes, purely nacreous. d_golem is correct to some extend - If the calico Oranda in this topic lost its black, then it would become a Sakura-coloured. |
