Finally ... I managed to talk to my wife and convince her that this little hobby of mine will further enhance our family life. I got the approval for a 24 x 12 x 12 - 14(H).

Anyone in Hougang aera can help to seed a new canister for me for a week.
I'm thinking of getting eheim ecco 2231.

If you have not bought the ECCO, don't.

I have read nothing but poor reviews on it. Supposingly the self-priming handle doesn't work well.

It does come complete with sponge media, which matures quickly. Meanwhile like ET said, better cycle yourself with some cheap and healthy fishes.

The 221x series is better... but more difficult to prime. It has a better re-sale value becoz more pple like that series.

Heck... just use 2 sponge filter and skip the canister entirely.

Also, if you have approval for a 2 feet tank, go with one with a 18 inches depth and keep the height at 12 inches (if you can find such a tank). It's better to keep goldfish in shallow water.

Oh yeah, don't forget to paste black or white omaya paper and shoot lots of pics to show us your fishes! Forget those pinkist aqaurium lamp too; get a daylight PL lamp for those numerious studio shots you will be taking.

Funny, after I post, I happens to read HB post on the ecco.

I'll look at the next inline 2213.

As for the filteration system, I'm thinking of using a OHF together with the canister.

As for the height, I used to have a 24x18x18 and she didn't like - she made me throw it away the last time, so I'm going to play it safe and not push the limit.

The main complaint the last time as I found out, she got jealous that the goldfish got more attention then her.

That was a combination of high workload, a troublesome system, plus elder girl into primary 1 and chinese new year.

Spoke to my elder girl and she missed the goldfish dearly. So I have to create a balance.

The reason for the seeding is because from my experience, the cycling time is where it take the most of my time & attention. I have to reduce that impact.

As for the quality of the goldfish, I hope not to disappoint folks here, as I'm afraid I'm not the type to go out of the way to get swee swee ones, I like them just the same. I read up alot about the selection styles will try to keep those in mind when I'm going to buy them, it is a family affair. As for photography, I'll try as I'm having a lousy Panasonic digital camera for Fish photography.

Don't buy the 2213 or any canister filter yet. Just get two sponge filters and hook them up as shown.

You do see my canister system in the pic but that's becoz the tank is seriously disgustingly over-stocked. Keep just 2 goldfish (quality ones if you can afford) in your new 2x1x1 (made by FivaPlan perhaps) filtered by the sponge filters will give you more quality time with the wifey and daughter since you'll need spend less time maintaining it.

The sponge filter, somehow, can mature within a week too so you can get down to appreciating your fishes quickly.

So to clarify, the weekly schedule is change 20% aged water and squeeze the sponge.

I'm thinking of getting a Rena 100 is that enough to power this setup?

Are you serious that you have 12 in your 2ft?

Er... who said 20% weekly ( shirely!)? That overstock tank I change 100% twice a week. For your new sparsely stock tank, 80-90% a week will do. Hey pal, it's only 55 litres. That's just two pails of water. Massive water change is easy and quick. I can do it in less than 10 minutes.

The Rena is an excellent choice. A fren swears by it. He saw me cleaning my airpump and laughed that he used to do it too but since getting a Rena (I don't know which model) he hasn't done it leow.

Since you don't own a air pump now, spring for the expensive Rena; afterall, I have saved you a bundle on the canister you no longer need to buy.

Don't listen to shirely, and the misleading prank Mr. D was playing on her.

Aging water NO LONGER WORKS in Singapore because our garman added chloramine into our tap water. Chloramine CANNOT dissipitate into air. Hence aging is a waste of time. Always use good anti-chlorine, such as Genesis, to condition your water. It will break down Chloramine into Chlorine and Ammonia, nearly instantly. You age water... your wife sure to scream at you for nothing paying attention to her but a pail of water instead.

My deepest apologies for not being able to show up yesterday to thank some of the people here who had given me invaluable advice.

Today is day 5 into my 2 sponge filter setup.
My config, Nisso NS 106 which is 2 x 12 x 14H, Rena 200 with a 2 way stainless steel splitter. 1 x 5-plan 2ft light. 2 small pot of Plants.

My live stock, 1 x long tail fan tail golden "normal goldfish" and 1 x fan long tail ryukin.

Just tested the water today, NH3 & NH4 = 0, NO2 = 0, NO3=<10ppm, PH = 6.8

I must say I'm total dumb founded with this low tech solution. The only problem there are some floating particles which disturbs me quite a bit. I think I will turn on the 2213 to polish the water this weekend after changing water. The sponge should still give me this good parameters right?

Those floating particles are part and parcel of a goldfish tank. Try putting your sponge filters at corners so that under and behind them are calm areas for large debris to settle down and hidden away from your fishes. With the 2213, you will get even more particles floating around because of the current generated.
