Hello all I just purchased a new Calico Pearl Scale. I have been waiting like a month for the shops around here to get them (very hard to get them in during winter down here). The only bad thing is he was in a quarinteen watch tank, so I believe he has ich and mabey some internal bacterial infections but he is eating and swimming just fine. SO Im treating him with Ampicillin by gel-tek its given to him like food and the fish eats it so it goes directly into his system hopefully it will flush him out, I will be doing 3 50% water changes a week to his quarinteen tank. I will post pics tonight once im off work. I also want to know if this medication will kill ick because its doesn't say it treats ick on the label any help or advice is welcome thank you all. ~JP

Dear Perry

May I know how/why you suspect the fish is stricken with internal bacterial?

Ampicillin is a broad based antibiotic which will never clear ick/ich which is parasitic in origin.Clear your ich with methylene blue,formalin/malachite green or any anti parasitic proprietary products of choice in your country.

Hi goldrush and thanks for your response I suspect internal parasites because he was in a watch tank for starters and secondly he has some long stringy white poop heres a link to the product looks like I will have to go run out and buy some of that medication (is it the best of the best?). The white feces usually means the fish is not eating or is not being fed. The fish is basically catabolizing stored fat and muscle tissue. You will also see this in a fish which has been fasted prior to shipment.

It is hard to tell from the photo if the fish has a heavy slime coat. Don't see any ich spots though. If the fish is lethargic or has clamped fins, you should do as the good Doctor says and treat for external parasites.

Most pet stores carry formalin/malachite green under the trade name Quick Cure. Proform C is just as effective and milder, but you don't often find it in a pet store. Unless you can get someone to look at a skin scrape with a microscope, you should also treat for flukes with praziquantel (preferred) or Fluke Tabs if you suspect external parasites.

Thanks for the reply steve yea I tried to give the fish two pellets of fish food today but he did not eat them I also went to my local fish stores looking for the methylene blue and nobody carries it so I got some Coppersafe by Mardel it says it treats Ich Velvet and other external parasites. I treating him for ich because the other fish in his tank had signs of ich on them so Im not taking any chances hes gonna be in the quarinteen tank for a week (5 days) I treated it today with the coppersafe. Im worried though because when I got him yester day he ate the other treatment as food but today when I tried to feed him he wouldent eat????

Maybe he doesn't like the taste of his medicine shiok.gif Try some live or frozen food. If he won't eat bloodworms then you know something is wrong.

OK I will try some bloodworms haven gotten those in a long time. Do goldfish also like live brine shrimp? I know my cichlids love them and they are great for color enhancing.
