I feed my Orandas Homemade gel food with greens..protein...I feed extra blood-worms weekly.. the genes actually will determine the head growth but other factors help..keep the water pristine and nutritious foods..

Thankyou Mister, well another update due to the stress of having ick I have lost three of my fish both red capped orandas and my large red and white Ryukin. What a damn shame but I learned my lesson from now on I will quarinteen every fish I get and I will make more frequent water changes. Im also planning on adding crushed coral and bio spheres to my large filter. I hear the coral gives of some sort of bennifical rays that help the good bacteria Im also thinking of getting a UV sterelizer what does everyone think about that??? I plan on live plants in the near future so I will be adding the propper water plant fertlizers in the water so is this a good idea??? Thanks

Perry, the yellow cosmic rays from coral was supposed to be a joke. Sort of a spoof on far infrared rays from Bacteria House media. It is still a good thing to have in your system though because it provides alkalinity and prevents a pH crash.

Perry,

The brown Oranda and the black Oranda are to die for! I love them both! I feed my Oranda's Hikari pellets, Pro-gold pellets, peas, bananas, oranges, spinach and occasionally flakes (if I'm in a hurry). I agree with what the other poster said about head growth, genes do determine! However, I've heard that keeping your tank at or below 70 degrees F and feeding Hikari products will help. The cold water causes the fish to store up fat cells in the wen and the protein rich foods go right for the wen...or so I've been told.

Take care of those beauties, I'm green with envy!

Oh haha I should of known it was a joke Steve. I was wondering how dead coral could give off rays??? Well I decided to just get biospheres for the filter lastnight. But Do you think the UV sterlizer is a good idea steve, or is it unecessary? Orandaluv thankyou for your comments, and yes the diet of greens does help the head growth but only to an extent as it really is determined by genes. My black orandas eyes are almost covered by his cheek and head growths, he has trouble seeing food infront of him so I have to hand feed him.
