Hi ALL
This link on Bakki Shower was posted by bro desireless earlier. I had a read through and found it quite effective (Bacteria House media) inregards to the tests carried out. The user was able to achieve the following with 15% water change of once a week: "lower nitrate level ( approximately 20ppm ) softer water ( approximately 40-60ppm ) very low DOC High ORP reading ( above 500 ) very high dissolved oxygen temperature of below 27 degrees constantly" Question is has any bros used Bakki shower method or just the bacteria house media here at RG? |

For this method u probably need lots of space... out door and u must not mind the sound.... since the shower blast through it is quite noisy....
I guess not many will sacrifice for it... |

Try and tell us lor
The only thing that attracted my attention is the lower nitrate level of around 20ppm. Bear in mind it is a 5ft tank, with sump, and houses a wild predatory fish with a very different digestive system. What's the fish to water volume in the tank? This was a discussion at ArowanaClub.com forum where someone DIYed an indoor Bakki Shower
Here: http://arowanaclub.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=21636 The pictures: Seems like he is using those longish flower pots as the filter tray. In the end you still have to buy the Bakuhenseki stones imported from Japan as the media... That should be the stuff that's most expensive then . |

Great idea...I like it. I want one too. Where can I get it from?I would love to use it for some rental toilets. They will be very useful (I think). I have run bakki shower and BH media (old style not new with hole thru center) for 3 years now with my koi.
I felt after some 27 years of learning filtration, I already had the best. What I learned was the water acquired a glassy look with it's use,the fishes appetites increased and it definetely brought something additional over and above my existing filters. Every year i break open a piece of BH and smell inside and it always smells sweet and good. I had a friend build two Bakki shower three tiered models out of stainless at 50% the standard size. I intend to fire one up with my goldfish this summer when I move them outside. Currently I am still running one on my inside koi pond in addition to heavily aireated blue J-mat (upflow). I am truely anxious to take my koi learning and apply it to goldfish and see what advances i can make. |

Heres my own DIY mini bakki shower. I have not tested the water parameters but the water is very clear and fish are healthy and growing well. The pics were taken when they were newly setup but now there is a greenish layer of algae covering the BH

You guys so RICH. I cannot afford the bacteria house media but have had pretty good luck with trickle tower filters which use pieces of coral rubble picked up along the beach. The coral rubble (pieces of dead coral rock) is about the same size as bacteria house media and has about the same texture. However, coral gives off yellow cosmic rays instead of far infrared rays.
Black plastic nursery pots (made for plants) work pretty well as media containers. They come in all sizes from a few cm to almost a meter. They are tapered so water flows from one to the other without splashing. The already have the holes in the bottom. They are less expensive than just about any other container of similar volume. You want the kind that are injection molded rather than blow molded. -steve |

Hi guys,
Just a quick question here, do you still use UV to get rid of green water for your outdoor setup? Thank you for your advice. |

I can only answer your question on UV from my koi experience. I live in a part of the USA that has fairly rapid temperature changes in the spring and fall that can overwhelm filter systems with the change. I don't use a UV because I believe if you have proper filtration and water exchange, you won't need one. I feel that by using a UV all year long, it gives you the impression that your water is clean and clear anf therefore healthy. Which may lull you into relaxing your guard. I think when a pond goes green when you don't want it to, it tells you "Hey, you need to see what's happening! " Also bulbs wear out fairly quickly and it may seem it's working when it's not. Powerful electro magnets never need replacing and will kill just as effectively.
In defense of UV, if you run them in the spring and fall while your pond's temperature range drops or rises from the 50's thru the 60's (fahrenheit) then you can eradicate your fishes paracites that lay eggs in the water and are vulnerable to the light as they pass by till they hatch. This is the usual time when the pond is transistioning from winter to spring or fall to winter and may help a filter system make the transistion with a little help. I suggest you turn it off after that |

I redid my filtration cos the bioballs were not doing a good job in submerged conditions. So I rearranged the filtration as such, 1st tray white filter wool, jap green mat, bioballs. 2nd tray 2.5 kg bacteria house. Filter box contains 2kg of ceramic rings and 2kg of biohome. Looks like a combination filter, trickle + submerged filter, all powered with a eheim 1262 3400l/hr pump. Amount of water in the fgt is around 1000 litres. Hope that the water condition will be better.
Does anyone have any suggestions to improve my filtration? Please let me know. Thank you very much. |
