IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

Colour Grading of the Calico Ranchu
Original Author:
(This is the re-re-redirect of the original article. Anyone who can find the link to the original article pls let me know)

In the dazzling world of goldfish, what fascinate me are the Tancho Lionhead and Calico Ranchu. The community of connoisseurs of the tancho lionhead (the famous "Xu" line, pronounced as "she") has always been a very large one, hence I think the genetic stability of this line will reach a satisfactory level in a matter of time. But it is not the same case for calico ranchu. Due to its colour gene types, no matter how much effort is taken to perfect the line, the offsprings will always look different from the parent fishes.

The Japanese nishikigoi and calico ranchu are different in many ways, hence there is no reference to the categorisation and grading of the calico pattern in goldfish. Based on the chinese cultural views and beliefs, I will try to categorise and grade the different calico patterns in ranchu.

Grade 1: Red-Headed Blue-Based Sesame-Dot Ranchu
IPB Image

This is the pattern that everyone is familiar with. Many people name this type of ranchu as "qilin" (or the commonly-known Japanese beer "Kirin"). In chinese fables, Kirin is a colourful mythical creature of good omen, hence I place this calico pattern as grade 1.

Examples:

Reference to Kirin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin

Grade 2: Blue-Based Calico Ranchu
IPB Image

It is a widely accepted that blue-based calico ranchu are held with the highest regards. Even if there is no fixed allocation of colours, so long as there is a striking blue based pattern, it will surpass those without such blue base. Hence, I ranked this type of common blue-based calico ranchu as grade 2. I shall name it as BiXie (Also known as: "PiXiu"). The more commonly used name is "貔貅" (Pí Xiū) but it has other names like "天祿" (Tiān Lù) and "辟邪" (Bì Xíe)

Examples:

Reference to Pixiu:
http://zhidao.baidu.com/question/23687899.html?fr=qrl
http://javewu.multiply.com/photos/album/291

Grade 3:Pink-Faced Faded-Based Black Sesame-Dot Ranchu
IPB Image

Generally, the colour of this type is less striking, but looks more gracious in a way. The blue-based colour is vaguely scattered and faded making it close to white in colour. The black portion does not normally lump together. The wens colour is mostly pinkish-white or orange in colour, and of course will have traces of other colours as well. I shall nickname this type as "Snow Leopard"

Examples

Grade 4: Jade-Faced Golden-Cloat Black Sesame Dot Ranchu
IPB Image

Such calico pattern has no traces of blue-based colour. As long as the colour is unique, it is still attractive. Such ranchus bear a pinkish wens, and orange based body, with black dots scattered around. The tail is always black in colour, just like a "Sika Deer". Let's just call it "Deer". Although the spots on deers are white in colour, we need to fit an animal in the the series of "auspicious beast". (Deers are regarded as auspicious animal among chinese)

Examples:

Grade 5: Tiger-skin Calico Ranchu
IPB Image

Needless to say, Tiger-skin calico ranchus are quite common. Let us call it "Propitious Tiger"

Examples:

Please note that these above gradings do not include those sakura-coloured nacreous scale type as they do not belong to the calico family. But it is known that certain percentage of offsprings from calico-coloured parent fishes will be sakura-coloured.

Just wanted to share some pics of my Chinese Calico Ranchus.

My cam is gone for repairs...so pic quality not really gr8, comments are welcomed but warn you my goldfish are not of any high grade, they were sold as AA grade here and are about 6inch and have faults in their tails.

I am very grateful for this translation. This really expanding my learning.
I am having some baby calicos of 1 months old, but still having trouble classifying them. Hopefully in the coming months they are easier to classify. Or I will ask friends here to help me classify smile.gif

All of them are from TAO.

I prefer the blue based calico ranchu over the tiger pattern one. The tiger one has slightly bigger tale and its belly is a bit out of proportion to body size....once i get some decent pics i will post them then you can see what i mean....but out off all the tiger calico has the thickest back.....due to its x-large belly size i try to take extra care of this fella.

I dont know when TAO is gonna get next shipment of chinese ranchus, but i want to get rid of the red ranchu i have and the only male calico ranchu (which has a very big tale) ..... if i can get 2 decent male calicos from the next shipment.

This is my calico ranchu. To me it looks like a Grade 2: Blue-Based Calico Ranchu. I believe it also exhibits some 'Sesame Dots'. unsure.gif I really like this fish even though he's got a wimpy wen.

Hi all bros,

A bit confused about these two commonly used terms. As far as I knew, calico is a tricolor patched goldfish (or cat, for instance), that has a mix of matte scales and some pearly scales. On the other hand, the term sakura is commonly used to refer a goldifsh with predominance of matte scales. From this point of view, all calico goldfish are sakura, but not all sakuras are calicos. This is the common point of view here and by the way is also my point of view, as you can see in the recent goldrush post about his calico that switched to sakura.

However, there are people that names calico to any fish that has both matte and nacreous scales, no matter how many colours it has. So you can (for instance) have an orange fish with predominance of matte scales, and these people will say this is a calico fish, which for me is not true.

Any thoughts?
