They are looking good from the last time around...and how are the calicos doing? post some clear pics, that would be gr8. And wat have you been feeding them?

My calicos are doing good....one has been spawning every 2-3 weeks...but im not interested in keep fry...due to space and time but will be looking fwd to spawning after winter....im very happy with one of my calico...i think it has bulked up a bit and might have grown in length. I would be taking some pics and posting them soon (got some low resolution pics but not good enough to post...just waiting to fix my cam then will take clear pics)

Unfortunately my calico died last week. I saw it at the bottom of the tank and looked lethargic so I moved it to a quarantine tank and added some salt and Melafix. It died 1 day later.

Very sad and I still dunno what caused it because there are no physical sign.


As for the other ranchus I fed them with Hikari bloodworms and lionhead pellets. I used an automatic feeder so that they get fed small quantities 4 times a day plus I fed them 4 cubes of bloodworms at night.

I posted some clear pic of the large Chinese ranchu in another post "Development of my SVR".

The smaller ranchu has also bulked up and developed more wen after 3 weeks in green water

Sad to hear about the calico, did it die say after a water change? also check your goldfish stomach ...it should be firm and not jelly like when you touch it...could be the sign of internal parasite due to overfeeding....out of my 4 chinese ranchus one has a jelly like belly when bought it...so far its doing good...and i guess thats more becoz that fish has disproportionate belly size (might have been since birth)

Anyhow i would recommend you not to feed 4 bloodworm cubes at night and the 4 times pellet food at day time....its a bit too much. Stick to 4-5times of feed per day (be it pellet or BW) and try not to feed them at night time. I feed my goldfish 5 times a day starting from 5am to 3pm (mostly they get fed pallet food...if im at home then BW). Senior bros here recommend that...try not to feed them about few hours before sunset/dark. In your case SYD i guess sunset is ard 7pm....so you sound make your last feed about 3 hours before it gets dark there this will give enough time for your goldfish to digest their food before they sleep and try to make your last feed of the day a bit lighter so they can digest food quickly.

Usually at night i notice a lot of poo on the tank floor before i turn the lights off ard 6pm....but when i get up in the morning i see all that poo on the tank floor is eaten up by my goldfish and the smaller pieces are sucked up by the filter....i guess this is a good sign which tells that the goldfish are not been over fed and are looking to scavenge for food from the tank floor.

ps: also include Hikari WeathGerm mini pellets in your goldfish diet, just mix it up with Hikari lionhead 2:1 ratio...that will give some fiber in your goldfish diet.
Soon im going to try out Saki Hikari for my goldfish, its got some beneficial bacteria that will help in food digestion....i would recommend you to try it out too...but not sure if its available in AUZ....might have to get it from overseas.

I think that is what happened. The belly of the ranchu was soft and bruised.

I saw those saki-hikari when I was in Singapore. Haven't seen them here yet but I don't mind trying since it has aggresive colour enhancing properties.

I just tried to bring some Saki Hikari to Australia from overseas through a friend. They got confiscated at the airport and disposed of (2 kg) . Apparently we can't bring pet food in ..I can't believe this because we can get the normal Hikari at LFS.

I just hope the wholesaler in OZ will bring them soon

Not yet because Hikari pellets are very good. I mix up the lionhead, wheatgerm, and bloodworms.
Occasionally I feed them frozen peas to prevent SBD

Thats some bad luck, my flat mate just got some Saki-Hikari pellet (200g) for me and other pellet food as well. He couldnt find a bigger size but anyway happy to have them...they look nice and quiet small in size.

Try buying from RG it self.....see if they ship it to Oz or ask Tao to bring some, that way even i will buy some off him.

the mini wheat germ floats but the big ones for koi sink. I used the big one and since my ranchus are jumbo they have no problem eating the. If your fish is small you might want to soak them first
