I just read the AQIS regulations for importing goldfish into Australia. I will never again say you guys have to pay too much for imported fish. The mark-up would have to be 10 to 20-fold just to cover the cost and hassle of compliance.
I know there is at least one large koi and goldfish farm there. It is in an old wastewater treatment plant near Sydney. A guy that works there used to post under the name of "ranskye" on the Koi Bito forum. -steve |

Plus the big importers do not like to bring in high quality goldfish since most OZ regards them as cheap fish and don't want to pay good monies. There are only a handful of hobbyists like us in RG who is willing to pay $90-150 for a goldfish I heard about a koi farm in Sydney but don't know that they breed goldfish. Most locally bred goldfish are feeders or shubukins. I'd better check Hobbyists in OZ must try to breed their own goldfish to raise the standards. |

But there was one caveat in the regulations that seemed to exempt bringing fish into the country in luggage - unless that is just a different set of regulations.
The early history of the goldfish hobby involved one initial import into a region (via ship, no less) followed by a group of enthusiasts breeding and distributing their own fish. I am sort of sorry that I missed that era. Now, we want mass production and global distribution. But, we may be missing the best part of the hobby. Breeding goldfish is a LOT of fun. -steve |
