Tung Hoi Update Options

I received confirmation today that the authorities have destroyed the entire Tung Hoi stock - apparently hundreds of thousands of fish are now dead - this information is not common knowledge as importers are scared this will "frighten" off customers for good - I feel we, as goldfish enthusiasts have the right to know - my entire tank was virtually wiped out because of SVC from fish from Tung Hoi.

Tung Hoi has been shut down until a full investigation is complete.

Importing of goldfish to Australia from China has been banned until further notice.

Hmmm... Strange. A friend of mine from another forum has just confirmed that the fish store she used to work at has just received a Tung Hoi shipment under a different company name. Seems this SVC scare is starting a firestorm of rumors. It'll be interesting to see which (if any) of these theories bears out in the upcoming weeks and months. You know SVC has some pretty common symptoms, many of which are indicative of other issues. Did you have any of your fish necropsied? One way or the other, nothing beats a good quarantine tank for defense against such issues.

At this point of time,there are just too many unconfirmed news and rumours.There are just as many unconfirmed deaths.Let us not be too paranoid and accrued all untreatable recent deaths to SVC.There are still shipments coming out of China but whether they are through unauthorised routes or under disguised of another company we may never know.My advice is to be prudent and buy Chinese fish at your own risk.The quarantine protocol has to be extra stringent and prolonged.Mortality rate of SVC can be as high as 70% and above!

Exports of goldfish from China Guangzhou has resumed after a self-imposed suspension of mere 2 weeks But fishes from Tunghoi and related agents are still banned from this port. So if you are seeing "new Tunghoi shipment" at this time, either they have expoorted through an alternate route or...

In any way, the lift of suspension is some good news as I was expecting goldfish market to be completely dried up if the suspension last for more than one month.

Yes, the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service (AQIS) along with Fisheries Victoria took one of my fish when it was still alive - I received a call the next day confirming SVC was found in the fish and most likely the cause of death. This particular fish had a protruding anus, blood from gills, white faecal casts and extreme lethargy. She passed two days later.

I completely agree - I will not buy anything at this stage - way too risky.

This is not true. Reports say that certain parts of China is still allowed. Reports say the fish disease has been spread from Koi (KHV). The dams where they breed and keep koi share the same water as the goldfish. Thus their farm has been shut down and all fish distroyed.

Many people import from Tung Hoi is because their fish is very cheap. But compared to the good breeders that feed their fish on high quality foods, thus higher prices and better quality, thus more expensive. Most Australian importers get their fish from cheaper places. Only 1 or 2 get their fish from the more professional breeders.

I don't know what kind of fish Tung Hoi sends Australia, but here in the U.S. they are definitely considered one of the premier breeders in the world. I'd like to see the fish from the farms that make Tung Hoi look unprofessional. They must be transcendental

Really? I think that is a real worry - Tung Hoi do use other farms as sub-contractors, I wonder if they have been looked into also. For me, the risk is way too high at the moment; I have lost 80% of my stock because of this, which is why I will now only deal with John Irwin - at least he knows what he is doing and the fish are Australian stock.

As far as i know, no one really is affected by Tung Hoi in NSW.

I know Trans, SLS, Tao and afew other import from the best breeders of Goldfish in Asia, so they should be ok. John Irwin's fish would be good too since he doesnt get from Tung Hoi.

I think AQIS should be more strict when fish are imported into Australia, but then again, we dont want them to totally ban the importation of goldfish like koi.
