Sometime in April this year,I received a call from Sam of Samgold telling me the sightig of a potential competition grade black in his Bangkok trip.Without hesitation and just based on his stringent eagle-eyed appreciation,I went ahead to purchase this fish from the accompanied photo. This is what I received from the email
It is a male and the body looks a bit short and headgrowth not so pronounced.Blacks are reputable for being slow grower and males are especially poorly endowed with good headgrowth. So it is a good challenge for me to bring out the best of this fish.My vision of this fish comprises of the following criterias that need to be addressed a)pronounced headgrowth b)black color maintained and not deteriorate c)Swimming posture not compromised d)acceptable overall growth Well today, here's the latest pictures of the above fish.Judge it for yourself if you can see if all the requirements are met |

This fish is housed in a 300litre FGT together with an almost white ranchu.Somehow I feel that the fish has lengthen .
These are more pics for your assessment An additional bonus is probably a pair of naturally endowed POM POM |

Just a quick note, i too feel the fish has lengthen.
In the 1st pic, the body appeared to be more round (or could just be the photo angle). Nice head growth, but i feel maybe the body could bulk more. kinder |

Lenghtened body with lots of potential to bulk up.Coupled with your generous new FGT setup, I bet this piece will turn into a beauty in due course. |

Kekekeke VERY IMPULSIVE PAYER I think the space given somewhat lengthen the fish which I am not too worry at this stage as it will certainly make provision for extra growth before the fish bulk in the future. When the fish arrived,I did not like its swimming in particular. But having the space to roam has certainly improve on this weakness.I am surprise at its headgrowth though.Being male usually I would end up with a smoother head than the cauliflower appearance as seen.Secondly I have not feed this fish with any FBW to enhance its headgrowth. But i must say the water is in excellent condition. |

It looks wonderful! Well done
I have a question about black ranchu's. What is the best way to keep them dark black? I feed my ranchu's Hikari Lionhead pellets. But they are colour enhancing food. I heard that colour enhancing food can oftern change the colour of black fish? |

If your blacks are from Thai origin, chances are that the black hue may not deteriorate with time even feeding with color enhancers.

Do you have a top-view photo Doc? This one seems to have a wider back and peduncle than most Thai blacks.

The color of a Thai black and the body of a Hong Kong black. Nice.
