Nice ryukin Doc. The pandas may have lost the black without the spirulina. Actually, they would have lost the black eventually - it's just a matter of time. I do not think you can restore it.

I guess so, just wishful thinking on my part on getting the goldfish back to its original color. Luckily, the 2 black svr ranchu didn't change color.

Some references and abstracts of some scientific papers supporting the effectiveness o f color enhancers(esp asthaxanthin) .Let me just reiterate that these are only effective to goldfish that are kept in algae-free environment and not in green water

You got to subscribe to read the full text but you can get a synopsis by reading the abstract which is the main summary of the experiment.

I have also been having some problems with enhancement/degradation of colours in my fishes. Currently I am rotating between Hikari Gold & Hikari Spirulina. My fish are in the sun 100% of the year as my pond is outdoor. The mostly red/orange fish usually display an enhancement of colours, ie. Orange becomes Vermillion, Vermillion becomes Red, a hardening of the edge between white and red areas, increased contrast between colours, etc. Sometimes, even the white becomes whiter in some cases. However, in most cases, I have noticed a dominance of red over black, ie. red slowly replaces the black areas in most fishes (except for pure black fish such as my black ranchu & broadtail moor). I don't know what the cause could be but this has happened in 100% of my cases. So eventually I end up with a pond full of red/white combo fish, some calicos and full blacks. Very disappointing! Here is an example of my pom pom that changed colour over time.

Thanks for bringing up some interesting findings.I think all red and black fish are doomed to become a full red fish eventually. It is just a matter of time.Environment, water parameters and food may hasten its deterioration. We can at best retards its loss of blacks by selecting fish with more blacks over its red, selecting fish which tends to discolor later(only breeders will know its typical bloodline)and select breed that show more lasting dual effect(red/black) like moors.

Congratulations on your excellent find. These two ryukins are almost identical to my eyes. It's rare to find two individuals so alike in most aspects. Even their swimming action/gestures are so similar.

It's too bad there is no pair category in this coming Aquarama. They are a good nomination.

Congrats Doc! champion.gif

Thanks William for the encouragement.Single colored fish will not be favoured at most shows unless they are exceptionally big or special.Just like in koi,the patterned varieties(Gosanke) win most of the prestigious awards.while the mono tone fish usually clinch only jumbo category

This is another graduate from this project.I have kept this fish for awhile(since about 3 inches). The kiwa is still very sharp and crisp but the head growth is still very wanting. It is rather a matured fish now(look at the eyes)Well it maybe over the hill, nevertheless the colours are still sharp and strong without much smudges good_very.gif
