Does a fish tank have to have a cover? I do not think my goldfish are going to jump out? Is there a purpose to having a cover/hood? Necessity?

Not necessary for goldfish as they dont jump. Usually covers double up as holder for lightings.

Goldfish and Koi should not have covers on the tanks. It's critical for these fresh water fish to get oxygen in their tank water. Carbon dioxide becomes trapped in between the water and the lid and is then absorbed into the water; depleting oxygen levels. The surface of the tank; much like a pond should be exposed to fresh air at all times.

The tanks should be large enough so that the water table can be lowered to a safe level. Goldfish could accidentally leap to their death during a spawning session. If you know you don't have a mixed gender pool; and there's no spawning, not much reason to worry.

If you feel like you must have a lid; try a screen instead. If your tank cover contains a light fixture; it probably has a flap that can be left open.

Everyone flip your lids, Venus
