Personally I have had bad experiences with Tetra color! the white in my fish turned yellow!!!!

If you want good food for your fish I can only reccomend Hikari sinking pellets! I feed my fish a veried diet of things though for best results. I feed; Saki Hikari (staple diet), Frozen Blood worms (for good head growth), Shelled Peas, Hikari Algea wafers and lots of vegtables (Carrots, cucumber, etc)

Instead the staple diet of saki-hikari isn't hikari goldfish wheat-germ the same as this? The two have similar ingredients and the hikari wheat germ is cheaper. Has anyone compared the two foods? Which is better? Any noticeable differences?

For food, i stick to Hikari. Expensive but my goldfish loves them more.

what is bad about tetra food?

I prepare my carrots and cucumber by cutting them into pellet sized portions, this has worked with most vegetables I have tried. When ever I am cooking I simply cut up a bit of the vegatables i am eating that day and the fish gobble it all up.

Goldfish8, I wouldn't say that Tetra is BAD! One of my fish fed on Tetra turned yellow, at least the white parts did. I got a new fish at the same time which I fed on Hikari Lionhead and the colors are fantastic, the white is brilliant and all the edges with red are crisp! So you could argue that the one fish was genetically prone to change to yellow and the food had nothing to do with it, but I would rather not mess up another beautiful fish. Pay the price for Hikari and you wont be sorry.

I feed my 5 fancy goldfish tetraMin tropical flakes in the morning and hikari wheat-germ pellets in the evening. I sprinkle the flakes covering the top and about 2 pellets per goldfish. Are my portions correct for 3.5" goldfish? Also, in a 20 gallon tank, with weekly 15% water changes, will they grow any larger?

How large will a typical store bought fancy goldfish get under these conditions? When does a goldfish stop growing? How old has your goldfish lived until?

Goldfish8: Your tank is overstocked. I have heard that 20 gallons per fish is a good rule of thumb if you want to allow your fish to be healthy and live to their full potential life. I currently have a 125 gallon tank. It is currently houses four goldfish. It is filtered with a Rena Filstar XP3 and an Eheim 2028. They are very messy fish and their waste is poison to themselves. With your current setup I would do 5 gallon water changes DAILY. And if you can't find it in your schedule for that level of maintenance I would recommend buying a quality water test kit so that you can at least check your ammonia levels daily. If they go above 0.25 then find the time in the schedule to do a 5 gallon water change. Your fish will QUICKLY outgrow 20 gallons. Look into getting a larger tank sooner rather than later.
