If you keep goldfish that looks good from the top, such as top-view Ranchu, Butterfly Demekin, Celestials, Bubble Eyes, Tosakin, and to some extend, Pearlscale etc, you will probably want to appreciate them in a white enamel basin. The following ranchu in a white enamel basin belongs to bro xerovix.

The white background shows off their colour best as it does not cause colour distortion. A white (or red & white) shinny fish looks pink in a red bowl! Instead of enamel, you could use ceramic or plastic white bowl as well, but only an enamel bowl could give you the correct “look and feel."

However, it’s difficult to find white enamel basin. Enamelware is getting less popular compared to inexpensive plastic or long lasting aluminium. Making matter worse is regular enamel users prefer coloured enamel as they look more beautiful and are more resistance to staining. I’ve seen some white ones at wet market but they have prints and not completely white inside. I guess aunties like them that way.

After looking high and low all over Singapore, Allan finally found a shop at Whampoa that sell white enamel basin. When I first wrote about the lobang, many bros were elated and rushed over to pick one up. So I’m not sure about the stock status now. Try your luck!

Ideally the basin should be 18-19 inches in diameter, but the largest one the shop has is 11 inches ($2.50). It also has a smaller 8 inches ($1.40) which I have quite a few that I use to defrost BW, salt bath a fish etc. They stack up very well and is space saving when not in use.

The Fish Tank does carry huge one at 24 inches. I think it goes for $30 and quantities are limited. But these are really big, as seen in the following pics at the AJRS competition. Kawai!

Finally, if you go to Bangkok for business or pleasure, I understand white enamel basins of all sizes are readily available! If you don’t bring back a Thai ranchu, at least bring home with you some white enamel basins! The following pic was taken at a Thai Ranchu Competition. Pom me nom yaa!

If you happen to come across 18-19 inches on sale locally, do let us know your lobang. Thank you!

Merry x'mas one and all!

Even though the shops currently don't have any stock of the white enamel basin, they do carry it and will bring in more if there's a demand. The shops are:-

House of Ranchu (Bukit Batok)
16 inches -- $13 each.

JK Aquatics (Geylang)
18 inches -- $10 each
24 inches -- not sure

IPB Image

The largest one in the attached photo is an 18 inches from JK Aquatics. The second smallest (11 inches) is from Whampoa, while in between is House of Ranchu's offer.

Do drop by the shop and check with the shopkeeper when their new stocks will come in.

Cheers!

Hi Ranchu Lover,

Have just bought one fully 'White' color internal metal basin.
Size: 14.5 ins. dia. X 5 ins. depth.
External little floral designs.
Almost ran round S'pore. to get this precious basin.

Shop is situated opposite Joo Chiat Complex.
2 storey shophouse.
Few of these household hardware shops.but only this shop situated almost the last of the row, which I was too happy to note the shopname.
Price at S$ 8.00 each.

I just snatch and go,so that I could take some nice pictures of my ranchus shiok.gif shiok.gif .
Am thinking of showing 50 over ranchus of mine,to all members for comments too.

Ranchu craze. shiok.gif shiok.gif

Actually, white enamel basin with colour prints are common.

It's an all-white that we prefer and hard to come by. Patterns distract viewing pleasure, and those kind generally are of lower quality.

But of course, no fish prawn also good.

I have seen some LFS using those white rectangular plastic container from Ikea for you to choose your fish. There are those round plastic basis that is almost white or light blue made in Indonesia for sale at about $5 to $6 a piece.

"No fish prawn also can". But we have forgotten that prawn is sometimes more expensive and more nutritious than fish. Maybe the plastic basis are better because they do not rust and gets damage easily.

The Japanese used to display their ranchu in wooden basin before the invention of enamel basin. I am sure that it will be a matter of time before the plastic basin will replace the enamel basin.
