I took the term "buffer" as PH buffer. Thought is to set the PH high high so there is a larger buffer to PH crash.
As for the KH thing, I thought is to ensure the water hardness safety, a value to gauge that we do not add Sodium Bicarbonate powder beyond the value that fishes can take. hmm.gif

i beg to differ.

i think a more accurate way of putting it is, if the pH is not low, adding bicarbonate would increase buffering and would also not affect pH too much. if pH is low like 6.0, i believe even 1gram of bicarb will raise the pH by around 0.5 in a 140L tank.

this is speaking from experience from my 3ft arowana tank.
