Tosakin Options

Hi, bought 2 junior Jap tosakin about 3". Put them in 2" tank with 6" water, hoping that the tails would grow bigger and better. Tank is equipped with sponge filter only. Immediately they adapted well. However noticed one would frequently faced head down when not swimming. The other had a cut near its mouth. Otherwise both are healthy , happily swimming and eating.

Then I decided to treat the one with cut mouth by adding salt and yellow powder in the tank. All seemed well. Repeat the treatment 2 days later. A day later found the one that always head faced down not eating. The following day, it died.

Decided to put the surviving one( now cured ) into my main pond with the ranchu. I fed my ranchu very aggressively and hence the tosakin also enjoyed the same meals. A week later, I found the tosakin dead. A day before, it seemed to hide among the corners.

I notice both tosakin do not eat like ranchu do. After a few pallets, they tend to freeze a while as if to digest.

Would appreciate it if anyone would advise me whats wrong.

Caring of Tosakin is different from that of Ranchu?

What is the best age to buy tosakin?

Is it recommended to keep ranchu and tosakin together in a pond?

Until I hear from you, i would avoid Tosakin for the time being.

Tosakins are more delicate than ranchus and should be kept in a quiet tub. Meaning somewhere with not much water current so that the tail will grow nicely to curve back. So your filter should be "modified" such that the trickles do not cause much disturbance in water.

As for the death of your tosakins, it could be some other causes of diseases. Always avoid buying those goldfish that "flips". This is "head down" symptoms which no one has a confirm cure for.

A quick check with our AquaCal reveals your 2 ft tank (w/ 6 inches of water) carries a total capacity of 28 litres, or 7 1/2 US Gallons.

That's way too little for even one small goldfish. The margin of error for good water quality is dangerously small.

Your tosakin may already be sicken when you bought them but your small tank further stress them out....

Thks brothers. But the Tosakins seemed happy and were feeding well in my 2 feeter before their demise. So unpredictable. I actually timed switch my power head in my pond for 1 hour, 3 times a day. This is to provide a little exercise for the ranchus, otherwise they might get fat. Maybe this current is too much for the lone tosakin. If this is true, I will not keep tosakin again. Wonder what goes well with ranchus in terms of habitat and feeding in the said pond?

I keep my tosakin with my ranchu and they are doing very well.
Tosakins when small are probably best kept in a small ( 2 x 2 ) pond with minimal water disturbance.
I think the reason is that a small space prevents the body from growing too fast and to allow the tails to grow. If the space is too big, the tosakin tends to swim around too much and the tail development suffers...
Don't be disheartened - tosakins and jikins are well known to be more difficult to look after as compared to ranchus...

You don't have problem feeding the Tosakin where it can't swim/fight with relatively more agreesive Ranchu for food?

How much water was in your 2x2, and may I also know what was the pH like? One myth on Tosakin is it needs very low (or was it very high?) pH.

In it, there good chapters on goldfish keeping, including good info on the Ranchu and the Tosakin and Disease Mx. Better to get first hand info from the book rather than thru 2nd hand pseudoexpert like me
