Time To Buy New Gfs Options

After absorbing all the advice from fellow forum-ers, I managed to cycle my tub liao ( no dead fishes for abt a week liao, I use guppies to cycle my tank coz they are more hardy )

Time to buy new GFs liao so happy .

I understand for newbie, shouldn't get too x one cos it still will die easily if not taken care off properly, so wat will be the price range / size of GFs that I should be looking at ?

I live in the NE, any good place to get some healthy GFs ?

Few Q again :
1. The GH & KH of my water is dropping, what should I do ? I read something on coral chips, any idea where to get that ?

2. I also read something on buffering water ( using baking soda ) any idea on that as well ?

3. I also read something on Activated Carbon to remove the smell from the water, is it true ? coz my wife complaining the water smell ( fishy smell ) although I dont think so

What makes you conclude that your tank is cycled and matured already ? Taken any reading on Ammonia/nitrite level ? No dead fish for a week doesn't indicate that it's matured ! Did you read up anythng on this topic ?

Guppy's bioload is definitely much much lower than GFs, in this case, your tank is basically not tuned to the eventual bioload, not to mention cycled or matured. In normal case, it takes minimum of at least a month or even more to cycle a goldfish tank.

Please consider to find out more on this topic (there are plenty of the website on this topic,) before proceeding with the next step.

1. ph and kh dropping may be due to nitrifying activities. coral chips can be bought at C328 for $2 a pack that can last you a long time for a 3 feet tank.

2. If you have coral chips, you will not need baking soda.

3. Carbon can absorb the smell if that is what's bothering your mrs. But using chemi pure would do the trick too.

As laser mentioned earlier, it helps to read up a bit more on tank cycling and water chemistry.

Then U tell me how to know when the tub is properly cycled lah, I newbie mah, dun expect too high lah, even i read all the posting here I may also have problems understanding mah.

actually all the questions you had posted can be found by just doing a simple search on this forum....

btw, if your water is cycled, there shouldn't be any sort of umpleasant smell coming from your tank/tub. try to avoid using chemical filtration such as carbon, zeolites etc....as you wouldn't know when they will lose their effectiveness....

increase your filter media so that u can cultivate more BB.....
and also, do not overstock....
if you overstock, water quality will deteriorate and fish cant develope well too....

I have 1 mechanical filter, 1 guppy sponge filter and 1 air stone ( hidden behind my soya bean griller ) -> refer to attached pic ( sorry, dun have digicam to take pic ) to cultivate BB, enough ??? need to add BIOHOME ?

I'm just planning for 2 GFs in my tub ( 2ft x 2ft x 8inch )

most of us don't practise gravel, because most of us find gravel harder to managed for goldfish. and if not managed properly, it can become a hotbed for disease. but then again, with only 2 goldfish and 2 other filters, you might just have the right balance. try, no try no harm no learn. i just to have so much dead goldfish

IMHO I dont think Lazerguy is fierce, I have seen him personally & also have taken a lift from him before and also he responds to PM very promptly.

My personal experience with uncycled tank water was terrible, many of the goldies fell ill within few days.

Wah lau, I sound fierce meh ? Wait till you receive postings from Jos Nana or Hun citizen....

Apologise if there is any discomfort lah, as what g-string has mentioned, just do a search here or elsewhere, you should able to find most of the information needed.

For a newbie, my personal thinking will be find out more before you start, it's okay to fail initially, but most important is what you have gained from the experiences and don't commit the same mistake again.

It's simply no use to let others spoon feed you all the way with every details/information, should put in effort to verify what is right and what is wrong.

I tried / did tried searching for "cycle" using the above "Find" function but came out alot of un-related stuff.

I also read somewhere that when a tub/tank is cycled, the ammonia & nitrite level should be at 0 level which is what my tub is reading but of coz I understand that the guppies bio-load is much lower than GFs, therefore in that case, should I be buying some cheap cheap GFs to continue to cycle my tub for another month before buying my actual favourites ( Ranchu / Lionhead ) ?

As for the rest of the forum-ers, please kindly advise on what to search for using the "Find" function so that newbies like me can catch up fast, not too depending on U guys to spoon-feed.
